Parti Liyani and AGC told to go for mediation instead of going to court

A former domestic worker's attempt to seek compensation for her wrongful conviction took a twist yesterday when the judge suggested that the parties go for mediation instead. Ms Parti Liyani is seeking compensation from the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) after her conviction for theft was overturned on appeal by the High Court last month. The 46-year-old Indonesian's lawyer, Mr Anil Balchandani, told the High Court she had suffered losses of about $71,000 as a result of the case. This included $41,000 for loss of income in the four years after being accused of stealing from the family of prominent businessman Liew Mun Leong. About $29,000 was expenses for her accommodation at a shelter run by the Humanitarian Organisation for Migration Economics, a migrant workers' support group. However, the compensation Ms Parti can receive is capped at $10,000 under the Criminal Procedure Code if the court rules the prosecution was frivolous or vexatious. As such, Justice Chan Seng Onn urged both parties to settle the issue through mediation instead, as the cost of court proceedings would likely outstrip the $10,000 compensation.

$12,000 raised for 8-year-old girl in coma after Woodlands accident

Close to $12,000 in donations have been raised to help defray the medical bills of an eight-year-old girl who has been in a coma since last Friday after she was flung out of a van during an accident in Woodlands. The girl suffered a head injury and broke both her legs, and needed emergency surgery. She is now in the intensive care unit at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, where her father Eric Tan, 45, and his wife have been taking turns keeping vigil, hoping she wakes up. Speaking briefly to The New Paper yesterday, Mr Tan said his daughter Lovelynn's condition had not improved and the critical period of her recovery had been extended as the bleeding in her brain had not yet cleared. A long-time friend of Mr Tan's, Mr Andy Ang, 35, was the one who led the fund-raising effort. Mr Ang, who met Mr Tan more than six years ago while they were decorating floats for a temple, said: «He has not been sleeping all this while. We can only help him by raising funds so he won't need to be worried about the medical fees.»

TraceTogether token distribution to be done one constituency at a time with immediate effect

SINGAPORE - The distribution of TraceTogether tokens, which has been ongoing at 38 community centres (CCs) for the past six weeks, has been temporarily suspended so that the tokens can be distributed one constituency at a time. This is to prevent long queues from forming at certain CCs, which happened last weekend following the announcement that the TraceTogether app or token will be required for SafeEntry check-ins across a range of popular venues by end-December. The Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) on Tuesday (Oct 27) said the new mode of distribution will begin on Thursday, starting with Marsiling CC. CCs in other constituencies will be progressively opened for token collection between October and December, alongside CCs that opened earlier. «By the second half of December, all CCs will be opened for collection, including the initial 38 CCs. Residents in the 38 CCs who have not collected their tokens during the first collection wave will be able to do so at that time,» said SNDGO. SNDGO also said on Monday that people should collect their TraceTogether tokens only from CCs in their own constituencies.
