G20 envoys laud Saudi presidency

Mon, 2020-11-23 23:23 RIYADH: The ambassadors from the G20 states on Monday praised the Saudi presidency for undertaking such a huge task under extraordinary circumstances and providing a clear direction for tackling the coronavirus crisis. After the Riyadh Summit concluded on Sunday, King Salman formally handed over the rotating presidency to Italy, which will hold the 2021 summit. Speaking ahead of the closing remarks Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recommended holding two G20 summits — a virtual event in the middle of the year and a physical summit later. Italian ambassador Roberto Cantone told Arab News: “The Kingdom has given proof of excellent organization. The Saudi presidency has worked since the beginning to adapt the original program to the challenges of the reality.” “The Saudi president managed to catalyze G20 action to tackle one of the most pressing global emergencies of our time. This has been done in a very comprehensive manner, focusing both on the health emergency and on the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic,” he said. He said the incoming Italian presidency will build on the legacy that Saudi Arabia has left. South Korean ambassador Jo Byung-wook said: “The G20 Summit this year once again proved itself to be the premier forum for international economic cooperation. It would not have been possible without Saudi Arabia’s tremendous efforts leading all G20 member countries to invest their resources in responding to the global crisis.” The Kingdom has given proof of excellent organization. Roberto Cantone, Italian ambassador “Saudi Arabia demonstrated its leadership and competence to the world by successfully hosting two summits this year,” he added. “In this respect, as suggested by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, holding two G20 summits annually would actively utilize this global forum with proven effectiveness.” Japanese ambassador Tsukasa Uemura told Arab News: “The summit successfully provided a clear direction for the international community in the midst of the crisis, which is significantly meaningful in such a difficult year.” “Saudi Arabia has demonstrated tremendous leadership in delivering clear and vital messages to the international community that the G20 would take the lead in creating an international order for the post-corona world,” he added. EU ambassador Patrick Simonnet said: “We have very much appreciated the Saudi presidency for holding the Extraordinary Summit in March, where G20 leaders discussed the most urgent consequences of the pandemic on all aspects of our lives.” Praising the Kingdom for the G20 Summit’s success Chinese ambassador to Saudi Arabia Chen Weiqing tweeted: “A friend sent me a message from China that amid the uncrecedented pandemic Saudi Arabia has achieved exceptional success in chairing the G20 over virtual conferences, and he was very impressed. I agree, as the Kingdom has won the respect and appreciation of the world.” Mexican ambassador Anibal Gomez-Toledo noted: “The crown prince’s proposal to hold two G20 annual summits could have potential and should be further discussed by the group’s members.” Indonesian ambassador Agus Maftuh Abegebriel told Arab News: “We acknowledge the recommendation made by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on holding two summits. It would surely be beneficial to the economic recovery. He said the Saudi presidency has proven that the G20 Summit can also be held virtually and prove effective.   Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: G202020 G20 SummitG20 RiyadhG20 Saudi Arabia 2020 Saudi Arabia to make coronavirus vaccine free for citizens and residentsSaudi Arabia says Jeddah fuel tank blast caused by ‘Houthi terrorist missile’

Startup of the Week: Hue Cafe: Making an art form out of coffee

Tue, 2020-11-24 00:04 Coffee shops have always been an intrinsic part of Arab culture and one Saudi cafe has made an art form out of creating the right environment for the perfect brew. Jeddah’s Hue Cafe not only offers delicious Arabic coffee and a meeting place but also the stage for artists to express their creativity. The outlet has become a favorite haunt for artists of all ages who play with colors and paint while sipping a cup of coffee. Tariq Banjar, who opened the cafe on July 22, told Arab News: “I’m someone who goes to cafes a lot. I noticed that all cafes are the same. They did not have anything new to offer. People just sit and talk. “I wanted to do something different. I wanted people to do something that make them put their phones aside and release their negative energy. I wanted something that elevated people’s spirits.” Banjar’s inspiration for the venture came from his wife, who is an artist. The cafe’s customers vary from those who simply wish to spend quality time with their family, to professional artists and beginners. “But they’re all looking for some place simple, quiet, and peaceful. It is important for me to make customers feel like they’re at home,” he added. Banjar decided to call the cafe Hue because of the simplicity of the word and its meaning in terms of a shade or color, and even shades of coffee. He said art was important in the Kingdom and in all aspects of life. “Many artists told us they’re happy they found a place.” Hue Cafe also allows artists to organize workshops to help them promote art and talent. “We’re not just a cafe or a business cafe. It’s more than that because you get to do activities here.” Prior to opening the cafe, Banjar said he had not realized the extent of artistic talent in the city and added that as well as painters, musicians, poets, and calligraphers were among those who came to drink coffee and practice their art forms. Minimum wage for Saudis raised to SR4,000

Author: Tue, 2020-11-24 00:25 RIYADH: Saudi Minister of Human Resources and Social Development Ahmed Al-Rajhi has issued a decision to raise the minimum wage for Saudis registered in the Nitaqat program from SR3,000 ($800) to SR4,000. A Saudi worker with a minimum salary of SR4,000 will be considered as one worker in the Saudization percentage of the Nitaqat program, which was introduced to promote localization of the workforce. The program also aims to enhance jobs for Saudi nationals through aligning the quality of nationalization with a range of incentives given by the Human Resources Development Fund. A Saudi employee earning SR3,000 or more but less than SR4,000 will only earn the company half a point in the point-based system. Those earning less than SR3,000 will not be counted at all. Part-time Saudi employees will gain a company half point in the Nitaqat system. Flexible work system employees are calculated in the percentage of the Nitaqat program as one-third of a Saudi worker for the entity they work for, provided that they complete a total of 168 working hours and pay social insurance contributions. The decision also applies to Saudi students residing in the Kingdom who regularly work part-time as flexible work system employees, or permanent part-time workers.   Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: Saudi employees Saudis look forward to critical thinking and philosophy lessons in schoolsSaudis donate falcons to protect rare breed
