The first hearing in the corruption case against Istanbul's Şile Municipality has ended with the trial adjourned to October 21. Fifty-three defendants appeared before the court, among them detained mayor Özgür Kabadayı and Berkant Acil, the brother of charity figure Haluk Levent. Kabadayı was arrested and removed from his post earlier as the investigation moved forward. The charges cover forming and joining a criminal organisation for unlawful gain, bribery, extortion and bid rigging in public tenders. Prosecutors say the practices ran inside the municipality and were tied to decisions on contracts and payments. The hearing gave defence lawyers their first chance to respond to the file. With no verdict issued, the presiding judge set a new date in autumn. Court practice in cases like this suggests the detained defendants will remain in custody until the next hearing.

Şile Belediyesi'ne yönelik 'suç işlemek amacıyla örgüt kurma ve üye olma', 'Rüşvet', 'İrtikap' ve 'İhaleye fesat karıştırma' suçlarına ilişkin yürütülen soruşturmada kapsamında tutuklanan, görevinden uzaklaştırılan Şile Belediye Başkanı Özgür Kabadayı ve Haluk Levent'in kardeşi Berkant Acil'in de aralarında bulunduğu 53 sanık ilk kez hakim karşısına çıktı. Duruşma 21 Ekim'de görülmeye devam edecek.
