The US Department of Defense has classified Confucius Institutes, Chinese-funded cultural centers at American universities, as institutions that pose a threat to national security. It accused entities linked to them of carrying out propaganda activities, gathering information targeting intellectual property, and influencing students. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Friday that the decision followed observations that institutions linked to these institutes were returning.
