President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will make a three-day state visit to Malaysia from July 13 to 15.The visit is at the invitation of Malaysia King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, and will be President Tharman's first state visit to Malaysia since becoming Singapore's ninth president in September 2023.Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Saturday (July 11) that President Tharman's visit follows that of Sultan Ibrahim's state visit to Singapore in May 2024.During his state visit, President Tharman will travel to Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. In Kuala Lumpur, he will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Istana Negara, after which President Tharman will call on Sultan Ibrahim and Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah.They will also host a state banquet in President Tharman's honour. While in Kuala Lumpur, he will receive a courtesy call by Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. 

A 42-year-old man was sent to the hospital on Saturday (July 11) morning after a knife incident at a commercial property along Lavender Street.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) stated that the incident took place at about 9.35am at 114 Lavender Street. According to the agencies, the man was conveyed conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.The said address is the premises of mixed-used commercial development CT Hub 2.AsiaOne understands that a woman, who is believed to be known to the man, was also present at the scene — where the man is said to have inflicted the injury on himself following a dispute with her.Sources at the scene told AsiaOne that the duo are believed to be in a relationship and that the incident took place, but AsiaOne has not been able to independently verify this.The incident allegedly took place in the vicinity of a pub there. Employees from the public entertainment outlet, who were waiting for their private-hire rides, did not wish to be interviewed when approached by AsiaOne. Police investigations are ongoing. 

A 26-year-old woman died in the hospital after she fell from height at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Yishun on Saturday (July 11) morning.The incident happened at about 1.10am at Block 257 Yishun Ring Road.When AsiaOne reached the scene at about 7.30am, some blood could still be seen along the concrete pavement beneath the back of a stack of flats. Conservancy workers from the town council were seen washing down the area.

SINGAPORE - About 15ha of forest in Clementi's Sunset Way area will make way for new public housing developments in the coming years.The Housing Board on July 10 announced plans for the 23ha Maju Forest. The board had commissioned an environmental study for the greenfield site - land that has never been built on - which has been largely zoned for residential use since 1980.HDB said about 8ha of the site, which is bounded by Brookvale Drive, Clementi Road and Sunset Way, will be retained to «provide refuge for wildlife and facilitate fauna movement».This includes a natural freshwater stream and vegetation that has high biodiversity value, as well as the area around the Old Jurong Railway Line where a new 4km-long nature trail is being studied.Nature groups were engaged throughout the planning process, the board added.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF) search-and-rescue unit Rescue 10 was activated on Friday (July 10) night to evacuate a man onboard a ship who required urgent medical attention.In a Facebook post on Saturday, RSAF said its personnel «safely airlifted» the patient to the new helipad at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). An eyewitness, Andrew Ong, said he sighted the helicopter approaching SGH at about 10.35pm. A video posted by Ong shows the helicopter descending towards the new helipad, with emergency vehicles seen waiting near the landing area.

SINGAPORE — Eleven former Certis Cisco enforcement officers were on July 10 convicted over accusations of misappropriating confiscated products or keeping stolen items such as vapes and contraband cigarettes.The 11, which included a female former officer, had committed the offences when they were at the Health Sciences Authority's (HSA) enforcement unit under the Tobacco Regulation Branch on a temporary transfer.The former officers who were convicted are: Muhammad Khairul Izzul Shah Abdul Karim, 38; Muhammad Fitri Jaffar, 39; Muhammad Haziq Khamzah, 32; Nurazmy Yussof, 33; Sufian Mohamed, 45; Mohamad Aidil Abu Bakar, 47; Mohamed Fiaros Mohamed Zakaria, 43; Muhamad Hazim Mohamed Jalil, 34; Muhammad Faddley Abdul Wahid, 38; Muhammad Syafiq Tahar, 39; and Olivia Chan Wei Ying, 39.A spokesperson for Certis said that the individuals involved in the case are no longer with the company.«Certis does not condone such criminal acts and we expect our officers to uphold the highest level of discipline and professionalism,» the spokesperson added.

While many retirees enjoy a slower pace of life, one 68-year-old Tampines resident has taken it upon himself to use his photography skills to catch litterbugs and parking violations in his neighbourhood.The self-declared mission has earned Tan Qiangsheng (transliteration) both praise and criticism from residents.Tan, who moved in a decade ago, told Shin Min Daily News that he started noticing residents committing acts such as littering cigarette butts, spitting on the floor and parking outside designated spaces.Unable to tolerate such behaviour, Tan reportedly began photographing the incidents as evidence.It is not known exactly which unit Tan lives in.According to Tan, he spends «every morning, afternoon and evening» observing from his window and taking photographs of any alleged offences before submitting them to the authorities.Besides taking photos and videos, Tan also writes down his observations. The taxi driver who lost consciousness while driving on the East Coast Parkway has died, police said in an update on Friday (July 10).During the Monday incident, the 73-year-old male driver was ferrying a woman named Winnie Lee and her six-year-old son. The number of marriages registered in Singapore continued to decline in 2025, with couples marrying later, according to figures from the Singapore Department of Statistics (SingStat).In a statement on Friday (July 10), SingStat said 24,688 marriages were registered in 2025, down 6.2 per cent from 26,328 in 2024.The average number of marriages registered annually between 2023 and 2025 stands at 26,442, lower than the 27,156 recorded between 2016 and 2019, reflecting a longer-term downward trend.Compared with a decade ago, marriage rates for men and women also fell.In 2025, there were 39.1 marriages per 1,000 unmarried males aged 15 to 49, down from 44.2 in 2015. Among unmarried females in the same age group, the rate fell to 38.1 per 1,000, from 41.1 a decade earlier.

He went in with hopes of fixing a toothache, but left with holes in his mouth, wallet and bank account. A man surnamed Li from Shaanxi province in China visited Datuanyuan Dental Clinic last September to seek a cure for his aching tooth, South China Morning Post reported on Friday (July 10).The 63-year-old told Chinese media that the clinic had put out advertisements claiming that patients would be able to «get a dental implant in the morning and eat meat in the afternoon», and even «have a complete set of teeth» to «live past 100».Believing their advertisements, Li got on a car that the clinic provided, even receiving a free check-up.'Only had 30 yuan left'Convinced by the clinic's various offerings, Li placed his faith — and his teeth — in their hands.However, what was supposed to be a quick fix became a nightmare for Li as the remaining 12 teeth he had in his mouth were all removed, with the clinic placing 10 artificial teeth in Li's mouth, Guangming Online reported.Li was also charged 18,800 yuan (S$3,573.03) for the procedure, draining his bank account and leaving him 6,200 yuan in debt.

A woman was left shaken after allegedly spotting someone peering through a hole while she was using a temporary female toilet during Home Improvement Programme (HIP) works at her home in Yew Tee.In a Facebook post on Friday (July 10), user Nahk Naze shared her account of the incident, which she said took place at the temporary shower facilities serving Blocks 563 and 564 along Chua Chu Kang Street 52.According to the post, she noticed a hole in the toilet wall and allegedly saw someone behind it. One person was taken to hospital after a traffic accident involving a van near the Kuo Chuan Presbyterian school zone in Bishan on Friday (July 10).Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to an accident along Bishan Street 13 at about 1.10pm. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School students are typically dismissed at 1.25pm. Two SBS Transit staff members have been commended after helping a man recover the $20,000 cash he left behind on a bus on Monday (July 6). The public transport operator praised assistant interchange supervisor Lalastella Tse and bus captain Giam Ming Huat for for their «honesty, vigilance and teamwork» in a Facebook post on Friday.The passenger, identified only as Ma, had accidentally left a paper bag containing $20,000 in cash on bus service 851 on Monday, according to the post. He later realised the bag was missing and frantically called Yishun Interchange for help. Tse, who picked up his call, recalled being «shocked by the large amount». She quickly traced the lost bag to a bus being driven by Giam. At the same time, another passenger had alerted Giam to the unattended bag and the bus captain had kept it safe to return it at the interchange.Ma later arrived at the interchange to verify his belongings and was «overjoyed» to find the full sum intact, said SBS Transit.He revealed that the money was to pay his workers' salaries. 

A total of 550 people, aged between 16 and 83, are being investigated by the police following a 10-day crackdown on scams and unlicensed moneylending activities. Police said in a news release on Friday (July 10) that the operation was conducted by officers from the Bedok Police Division from June 29 to July 8.The 341 men and 209 women being investigated are believed to be involved in over 1,800 cases of scams and unlicensed moneylending activities.Of these, some 418 people were allegedly involved in scam-related activities such as e-commerce, investment, job, rental, phishing and loan-related scams as money mules, resulting in losses of over $14.8 million.They are now being investigated for offences of cheating, assisting another to retain proceeds from criminal conduct and unauthorised disclosure of Singpass access code.The remaining 132 persons are being investigated for their alleged roles in unlicensed moneylending activities.According to the police, the transactions involved amounted to more than $2.3 million.

A female Gojek passenger has reported her driver after he allegedly made sexually charged comments and suggested a threesome during the ride. The 26-year-old passenger, who goes by the username huatyousay, posted about the incident on social media on Thursday (July 9).Half of the 2-minute video consists of footage from the car ride, which the passenger described as a «traumatic experience». Throughout the footage, the driver can be heard making a series of graphic sexual remarks, including comments about his sexual preferences, sexual acts and sex toys. He asks questions about the passenger's sexuality and can also be heard telling the passenger about having sexual encounters with women in multiple countries.«We can do threesome,» he suggests, just before dropping the passenger off.The passenger rejects his advances immediately, to which he apologises and says that he was «joking».Report against Gojek driver filedThe second half of the video shows the passenger recounting the ride. 

New homes will be developed at Gillman Barracks and Sunset Way in the near future, with plans to retain key ecological and heritage features at both sites, said the Housing and Development Board (HDB). In a statement on Friday (July 10), HDB said Gillman Barracks will be transformed into a residential estate comprising both public and private housing, while the Sunset Way site in Clementi will offer public housing integrated with greenery and nature.The developments are part of HDB's efforts to provide more housing options as demand for homes in Singapore remains strong, driven by marriage and family formation as well as smaller household sizes. No timeline has been announced yet for the construction of these HDB flats.To guide the developments, HDB commissioned environmental and heritage studies for both sites to assess their ecological and historical significance, as well as identify measures to mitigate the impact of development.

SINGAPORE – The only detected lightning strike to hit the ground in the Pasir Ris Beach area on July 5 – the one that killed a paddleboarder – originated from a main thunderstorm cloud “a few kilometres away”, the weatherman told The Straits Times on July 9.Responding to queries from The Straits Times, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said thunderstorms had begun developing in the north of Singapore near the Yishun area at about 3.20pm on July 5, before moving north-westwards.Forecasts for thundery showers were issued for many locations in the west, central and north of Singapore, said MSS, which is under the National Environment Agency (NEA).At about 4.30pm, thunderstorms developed around Punggol and moved westwards away from Pasir Ris. These intensified rapidly into a large thunderstorm that extended over the Straits of Johor, it added.Based on NEA’s lightning detection system, several lightning strikes were observed over the north of Singapore and the Straits of Johor.

A 24-year-old man was on July 2 charged for the alleged importation of 100 etomidate vaporiser pods.Sheikh Omar Bin Mohamad Ismail was detained by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers at Woodlands Checkpoint on June 30 after search and examination officers found two vaporisers and 100 vaporiser pods concealed in his car.The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said in a news release on Thursday (July 9) that subsequent laboratory testing confirmed that the seized pods contained etomidate.Amid ongoing investigations, Sheikh Omar was remanded a week to assist with further investigations and his case was mentioned again on Thursday.He will appear in court on August 18.HSA reminded would-be perpetrators that it takes a serious view of vaporiser and etomidate trafficking offences.Under the Tobacco and Vaporisers Control Act, etomidate and its analogues are listed as specified psychoactive substances in the Schedule.

A 24-year-old Singaporean man was placed on 15 months' probation for amputating his pet rat's limb without anaesthesia, and illegally taking and selling wildlife.Jenson Neo, who was caught in a sting operation by the National Parks Board (NParks) in 2024, pleaded guilty to five of 13 charges under the Animals and Birds Act on Tuesday (July 7), reported Lianhe Zaobao.The remaining charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.According to court documents cited by Zaobao, Neo had amputated his pet rat's injured front right leg on July 9, 2022, after believing the limb had become gangrenous.He carried out the procedure himself despite not being a qualified veterinarian.Before the procedure, Neo applied only numbing cream to the rat's leg, which was insufficient to alleviate the animal's pain.Illegal attempted sale of civetNeo came into the attention of authorities in 2024 when he attempted to sell a civet online. He had found a common palm civet near his home along Jalan Dermawan on Jan 26, 2024, and illegally kept it as a pet for about a month, according to court documents.

SINGAPORE — A night-shift nurse who rented a room in an HDB flat won a claim against her landlord after a dispute over daytime use of an air-conditioner escalated into harassment, an early termination of the tenancy and, eventually, hearings at the Small Claims Tribunals (SCT).The landlord was ordered to pay the nurse $1,536.47, including an $800 security deposit that she had withheld.The landlord later tried to set aside the judgment after repeatedly failing to attend court hearings, but Tribunal Magistrate Leon Abraham Tan dismissed the application, finding that she had deliberately stayed away despite being given multiple opportunities to appear.In grounds of decision released on July 7, the magistrate criticised what he described as the landlord's «airy disregard» for court dates, and said her conduct reflected «a conspicuous lack of respect for the judicial process».The names of the nurse and landlord were redacted in the judgment.The dispute arose after the Malaysian nurse rented a common bedroom in the five-room HDB flat from September 2024 under a one-year tenancy agreement.

A 67-year-old man was pronounced dead after he was found slumped over a void deck table at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Yishun on Thursday (July 9) afternoon.The incident happened at about 4.15pm at Block 128 Yishun Street 11.Photographs and videos of the incident an eyewitness shared with AsiaOne show a man on a void deck seat, dressed in a blue long-sleeved shirt and beige pants.His head was rested on the void deck table, and his black-coloured bag was placed beside him.At first glance, the man appeared to be fast asleep with nothing amiss.The eyewitness, who declined to be named, said police officers arrived at around 4.30pm and were seen trying to wake the man.A police cordon was later set up around the void deck and the officers were seen with surgical gloves.Over the next few hours, police investigators were seen checking the scene and its surroundings.A police hearse brought the man's body away at around 8.35pm.

A Singaporean man pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse on Thursday (July 9) after hurting a student with a hanger and forcing him to drink his own urine.The man was also charged with one count of voluntarily causing grievous hurt, and one count of providing false or misleading information to the Ministry of Manpower.The 31-year-old man had abused multiple students while employed by his aunt who ran an educational facility. He cannot be named due to a gag order protecting the identity of the abused children.He was hired to tutor primary school students in English and Mathematics, and was responsible for taking care of the foreign students staying at the facility, reported The Straits Times (ST). According to court documents seen by AsiaOne, he did not have any teaching or childcare qualifications.Forced boy to drink urineThe man had repeatedly abused a six-year-old male Chinese national who had moved into the facility in January 2023.For example, the student was locked in the toilet, and was only allowed to consume bread and water.

Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the National Healthcare Group (NHG) have issued advisories after TikTok posts featuring a woman allegedly posing as a healthcare professional to promote health products surfaced online.A Facebook post by SGH on Tuesday (July 7) shows screenshots of two TikTok posts featuring a woman allegedly impersonating a healthcare worker while promoting health products. In one of the images, the woman is seen wearing a doctor's coat with the SGH name embroidered above the left pocket, while another shows her dressed in a SingHealth uniform. The word «scam» is displayed in red, in between the two images.The hospital said it is aware of fake advertisements circulating on social media that depict an individual dressed in an SGH healthcare uniform promoting health products.«The person featured in these advertisements is not an SGH employee, representative or affiliate. These advertisements are not authorised by or affiliated with SGH,» the hospital said.

A 15-year-old is among 69 persons being investigated by the police for their alleged involvement in unlicensed moneylending activities. Police said in a news release on Thursday (July 9) that they conducted an islandwide enforcement operation from July 1 to 7.The operation saw officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the seven police land divisions conduct raids across Singapore.Preliminary investigations revealed that nine persons had harassed debtors at their residences, while 15 others were runners who had assisted in unlicensed moneylending activities by carrying out Automated Teller Machine (ATM) transfers.Also under investigation are 36 individuals who are believed to have opened bank accounts and provided their ATM cards, personal identification numbers as well as internet banking tokens to unlicensed moneylenders to facilitate their illegal operations.
