Dengue fever: NEA reports sight of hundreds of mosquito larvae wriggling in home's flower pot

Singapore is possibly facing the largest dengue outbreak in the nation's history. As such, it is more important than ever to protect our loved ones by staying vigilant and practising dengue prevention measures. According to NEA, the weekly reported dengue cases remain high: 1,452 dengue cases were reported in the week ending July 4, 2020. This marks the fifth consecutive week that case numbers exceed 1,000 — this means there are about 250 new infections every day. And as of July 6, 2020, the cumulative number of dengue cases for this year exceeded 15,500. If not curbed, it could break the unenviable record of 22,170 cases reported in 2013, the largest dengue outbreak in Singapore’s history. The chart below reflects the steep increase in dengue cases this year as compared to the previous years.

Holding and using phone while riding PMD, bicycle to be banned from Aug 1

From next month, those under 16 years old can be fined or even jailed for riding an electric scooter without adult supervision. Cyclists and users of personal mobility devices will also be banned from holding and using their mobile phones while riding. In addition, a code of conduct will be introduced to advise pedestrians on the safe practices. The measures, which were proposed by the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) late last year, are part of the Government's changes to the Active Mobility Act passed in February to improve safety on the use of devices such as bicycles and electric scooters. Other measures that have been implemented include tougher penalties for errant users and requiring retailers to send e-scooters for safety inspections. The various measures were proposed and introduced in response to a growing number of fires and accidents involving e-scooters last year. There was also a growing number of active mobility offences, with about 4,900 offences detected last year.

GE2020: PSP will continue serving residents, to decide on NCMP seats on Monday, says Tan Cheng Bock

SINGAPORE - The Progress Singapore Party (PSP) will continue to serve residents across Singapore despite not winning any constituencies in last Friday's general election, said party chief Tan Cheng Bock on Sunday (July 12). The party got 48.31 per cent of the votes against the PAP team in West Coast GRC, and the narrowest percentage margin obtained by a losing opposition team earned the PSP two Non-Constituency MP seats in the next Parliament. «Serving people is never a problem for me, because I've already served all my patients. Even as a doctor, I also wasn't purely a doctor. I feel that it is a social responsibility for us who are better educated, to give back some to the society in whatever service we can help,» said Dr Tan, a retired general practitioner and veteran PAP backbencher who formed the PSP in 2019. «We just continue to serve. I will of course tell my other PSP members to have this kind of philosophy.»

GE2020: Tharman explains appearance of Ivan Lim on livestream

Senior Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam yesterday explained the appearance of Mr Ivan Lim during a Facebook livestream, saying it was a move to acknowledge his work and allow him to thank residents for their support. The livestream on the Jurong GRC Facebook page premiered on Saturday morning shortly after it was announced that the People's Action Party (PAP) team led by Mr Tharman had secured 74.62 per cent of the votes against Red Dot United in the general election. The livestream had featured the other members of the PAP team along with Mr Lim, 42, who withdrew his candidacy before Nomination Day after receiving criticism from various quarters online over his character and conduct. His appearance therefore raised eyebrows among some people. Writing in the comments section of a Facebook post he had made on July 8 yesterday, Mr Tharman said that until Mr Lim stepped aside, he had worked «very hard» on the ground as a prospective candidate.

Man has part of finger amputated after being pricked while cleaning prawns, infected by flesh-eating bacteria

A man had to have part of his right index finger amputated after it was infected by flesh-eating bacteria. Quoting from a Facebook post by the victim's friend, Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Wanbao reported yesterday that the man's finger was pricked while he was cleaning prawns he had bought from a wet market. The victim, who was unnamed, said he had been pricked by prawns many times before and thought this time was no different. But by the next day, his finger had turned black and he had a mild fever. He went to a 24-hour clinic in Toa Payoh and was told to go to a hospital immediately. The man underwent surgery that evening and was warded in the hospital for seven days, including two days in the intensive care unit. He said doctors told him that if he had waited another day, he could have lost his arm or even died as the bacteria had reached his armpit. He warned other people to be careful when cleaning raw prawns or seafood. Flesh-eating disease, or necrotizing fasciitis, is caused by bacteria that are resistant to most antibiotics, and can be fatal if not treated quickly.

Mon, 2020-07-13 01:24 RIYADH: Arab Coalition forces intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles and six drones  fired by the «terrorist Houthi militia» toward Saudi Arabia on Sunday night, the alliance said early Monday.  Colonel Turki al-Maliki, spokesman of the Saudi-led coalition, said the Iran-backed militia fired the missiles and booby-trapped unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) from the Yemeni capital Sanaa toward civilian targets in Saudi Arabia. It was fortunate that the weapons of war were destroyed before they could hit their targets, Al-Maliki said. He accused the Houthi militia of escalating the hostilities to target civilians inside Yemen and neighboring countries. Main category: Saudi ArabiaTags: houthi ballistic missile

SFA launches Saudi Arabia’s first walk-run event in the summer

Mon, 2020-07-13 01:38 RIYADH: The Saudi Sports for All Federation (SFA) has announced its first outdoor event of the summer season, a series of competitive walk-runs called Step Together. The first Step Together virtual walk-run is open to individual and teams. Participants can register from July 17 until the closing date of July 26. Adults taking part can choose to complete either a 42 kilometer full marathon or a 21 kilometer half marathon over a period of 10 days, commencing on July 17. Children under the age of 15 taking part in the challenge will complete a shorter 10 kilometer race over the same period. The event is the first organized by the SFA since lockdown restrictions were eased. It is designed to appeal to all ages, abilities and demographics by offering both walk and run options. Participants who meet the distance goals will be awarded with finishing medals and electronic certificates celebrating their achievement. Participants will be able to use their own preferred digital fitness tracker. They will upload data and images every day to the race platform to register progress and compare their results with other participants on the race leaderboard. Community sports groups (CSGs) are also encouraged to join Step Together, with the event featuring an exclusive leaderboard for groups. Members of CSGs can complete simultaneously in both individual and group categories. Registered users will each receive email confirmations with a unique link and instructions for the Race Result platform. The dedicated link allows each participant to enter distance and elapsed time each day, validated by a screenshot from any digital fitness tracker. A results tab on the platform allows users to enjoy friendly competition and compare results with other participants. There are also leaderboards for various categories on the same page, including age, gender and distance. Staged under the banner of the Quality of Life program, the Step Together walk-run series aims to contribute to Vision 2030 by ensuring that physical activity levels are maintained and grow during the summer months. The aims to promote a renewed excitement and energy for outdoor fitness. A recent SFA report said there was a 60 percent increase in walking in Saudi Arabia since March, while running became 30 percent more popular. The report added that the increases mainly came from people who were previously less active. The SFA aims to further encourage enjoyment of physical fitness within this demographic. Step Together participants can register on the Race Result platform at sfa.sa/STen.
