Singpass has launched a new passkey login to strengthen security for residents and reduce the risk of scams such as phishing, said the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) today (June 30).This new login method for Singpass will be available from July 1, with the initial beta phase available to iPhone (iOS) users only. It will be extended to Android users in subsequent phases.The new login system strengthens defences against emerging cyber threats without compromising a seamless digital experience, while offering strong resistance to phishing attacks, said the agency in a media statement.Lee Shih Yen, deputy chief executive (development) of the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, said: «Stronger phishing-resistant authentication methods such as passkeys can significantly reduce the risk of attackers exploiting stolen login credentials, while offering users a simpler and more seamless login experience.»Passkeys, said GovTech, offer a more secure authentication method than passwords, which can be stolen, and conventional QR codes, which scammers can mislead users into scanning. 

Two station managers at Woodlands South MRT station performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a commuter who collapsed, proving that not all heroes wear capes.In a Facebook post on Tuesday (June 30), the Land Transport Authority (LTA) shared an incident from Jan 21 when Navin and Faizal, station managers at Woodlands South, sprang into action and saved a commuter.Recounting the incident, Navin said that he was carrying out his routine duties when a transit security officer informed him that a commuter had collapsed.The commuter appeared unresponsive and showed signs of cardiac arrest, he said, adding that he felt a sense of urgency in the moment.Faizal was alerted soon after, and performed CPR on the passenger with the automated external defibrillator.«He was struggling to breathe,» said Faizal, adding the paramedics arrived soon after to assist.«I think this is one of those experiences that tests you as a station manager when you need to remain calm under pressure,» Navin said, reflecting on the situation, calling it one that he «will never forget».

Four Singaporean men were arrested on June 23 for their alleged involvement with a transnational vape syndicate that supplies etomidate-laced vape pods, also known as Kpods.This is the first time the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is investigating a syndicate of this nature under the new Tobacco and Vaporisers Control Act (TCVA), it said on Tuesday (June 30).Kong Qi Cong, 32, was found with 1,000 Kpods at a Teck Whye flat on the morning of June 23, according to court documents seen by AsiaOne. Enforcement officers also seized more than $6,000 in cash.At a simultaneous raid of a Tampines flat, Willy Poh Wei Li, 32, was found with 111 etomidate vape pods.The seized etomidate vape pods have an estimated street value of more than $83,000, according to HSA.Two other men — Tobias Tan Wei An, 27 and Michael Jordan Tan Wei Hui, 31 — were arrested separately and are suspected to be involved in discussions with other persons to supply Kpods.The four suspects, were charged in court on June 24 and remanded for a week to assist with further investigations.

More than one million Singaporean households living in HDB flats will receive U-Save and Service & Conservancy Changes (S&CC) rebates in July as part of the permanent GST Voucher (GSTV) scheme.In a statement released on Tuesday (June 30), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said that the rebates will help to offset utilities expenses and S&CC for lower- and middle-income HDB households.Eligible households will receive up to $190 worth in U-Save rebates on their utility bills and up to one month of S&CC rebates in July, depending on the type of their HDB flat, the ministry said.This is the second quarterly disbursement for the scheme for the 2026 financial year, with one back in April and the next upcoming disbursements due for October 2026 and January 2027.In total, eligible HDB households will receive up to $570 in U-Save rebates and one month in S&CC rebates for the financial year.

Two websites linked to The Online Citizen (TOC) have been declared as Declared Online Locations (DOLs) under the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (Pofma).In a statement on Tuesday (June 30), the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) said that the affected websites will have to carry a notice alerting viewers that they are DOLs — that they have «communicated multiple falsehoods», and that viewers should exercise caution when accessing them for information.The operator of TOC's online platforms is also restricted from receiving financial or other material benefits from operating the DOLs, said the ministry, adding that the two websites will remain as DOLs for two years, until June 30, 2028.TOC's primary website declared DOL in 2025TOC's primary website, in addition to its social media pages, had been declared a DOL in June 2025, for repeatedly communicating falsehoods, said MDDI.

Preparatory works for the Long Island coastal protection project will begin from end-2026, with measures in place to minimise the impact on the environment and surrounding community, the authorities said on Tuesday (June 30).The Housing and Development Board (HDB) and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said that ideas gathered so far from more than 14,000 people will be used to shape discussions on recreation, coastline design, and future reservoir use.The preparatory works will take place in waters off the East Coast, at least 130m from the shoreline, and will be demarcated by silt screens and floating barriers to ensure public safety.First announced in November 2023, the Long Island project aims to protect the East Coast area from rising sea levels and inland flooding due to climate change.

The effects of the ongoing Middle East war — now in its fifth month — are rippling through, with Singapore households set to pay higher electricity and gas tariffs in the third quarter of 2026 due to a sharp increase in natural gas prices.The household electricity tariff from July to September, before the goods and services tax (GST), will increase by 17%, SP Group announced in a media release on Tuesday (June 30).This is 4.64 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) higher than the second quarter of 2026, from April to June.Following the increase, the average monthly electricity bill for families living in HDB four-room flats will rise by $17.14 (before GST).The overall electricity tariff (before GST), including tariffs for non-households, will increase by an average of 17.5% or 4.66 cents per kWh compared with the previous quarter. «The situation in the Middle East remains uncertain. Should the situation improve, global fuel prices and correspondingly the electricity tariffs for the fourth quarter of 2026, may decrease,» SP Group said.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) issued a notice to revoke LC Nursing Home's licence on Monday (June 29), over what it described as «serious and systemic lapses».The 93-bed facility, located in Siglap, will have its licence revoked from November 23.This means that it will not be able to provide nursing home services at the said premises from the given date, the ministry stated.Explaining why the revocation is not immediate, MOH said this considers the time required to transfer the 78 existing residents to other nursing homes.Meanwhile, the ministry has deployed an interim care team from Vanguard Healthcare to LC Nursing Home to safeguard the safety and well-being of the residents.It added that this will ensure that they continue to receive proper care throughout the process.'Serious view' of lapses found in two nursing homesReferring to the recent revocation of Windsor Convalescent Home's licence announced on June 18, and now LC Nursing Home, MOH said it takes a serious view of the lapses found.

A young boy injured by a signboard that collapsed on him at Rivervale Mall is recovering well, according to MP for Sengkang GRC Louis Chua who visited him on Thursday (June 25).Workers' Party MP Chua, who represents the Rivervale division, made a Facebook post on Friday evening saying that he had visited the 10-year-old boy with members of his team after the incident on June 20.A signboard at Food Junction's Rivervale Mall outlet had collapsed onto the boy at around 10.30am that day, and he was taken to the hospital.«We were relieved to see that the young boy is recovering well and in good spirits, even after the distressing experience for the whole family,» he said.Chua added that his team is in touch with the boy's family and will continue to offer support as they recover. The affected area was also cleared by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) after the necessary inspections and rectification works were completed, he said.The food court has since resumed normal operations, and Chua encouraged residents to continue patronising the mall.

Two men have been arrested after they led police on a motorcycle chase and subsequent foot pursuit in Choa Chu Kang on Sunday (June 28).Traffic police were earlier seen patrolling around Old Choa Chu Kang Road at around 8.30pm on Sunday when they approached a motorcycle for a check.Officers then signalled the motorcyclist to stop, but he did not comply and instead sped off. The police gave chase and the motorcycle skidded along Sungei Tengah Road towards Brickland Road, ending the motorcycle pursuit.However, a foot pursuit soon ensued, with police chasing one of the suspects to a junction between Jalan Teck Whye and Choa Chu Kang Road.This pursuit was captured on video and shared to Facebook group SG Road Vigilante Admin on Sunday, beginning with the two suspects fleeing after skidding against the flow of traffic as two officers on police bikes chased them.A male suspect can be seen dashing away on foot, crossing a road divider along Choa Chu Kang Road as an officer chases him.He then goes across to Jalan Teck Whye, mantling over a fence and running past a zebra crossing.

A week after fuel prices in Singapore were adjusted downwards, following the signing of a peace agreement between the US and Iran, Shell on Monday (June 29) posted a further reduction — this time, to its diesel price.In a price board update published at 1pm, the London-headquartered oil and gas company announced a 10-cent reduction to its posted price for diesel.Its petrol prices, which were reduced on June 19, remain unchanged.The last round of diesel price reductions were recorded between June 16 and June 17, while the last round of changes to petrol prices was posted on June 22.At the time of this article's publication, only Shell has posted a change to its fuel prices.

When Jasmine Goh-Chew boarded a plane for the southern Chinese city of Chaozhou in May 2026, she carried with her a small hope.The 11-day family holiday was planned around good Teochew cuisine, family time and an opportunity for her elderly parents to see the ancestral homeland they had never visited. Victims of online harms will be able to seek redress through the Online Safety Commission (OSC) which begins operations on Monday (June 29).The OSC was formed to support the office of the Commissioner of Online Safety as part of the Online Safety (Relief and Accountability) Act 2025 (Osraa), which aims to protect online users from harm.The Bill was tabled in Parliament last October, giving the Government powers to order social media platforms and app providers to take down harmful content.While there may be 13 separate online harms that the OSC is set to address, it will begin with five and progressively incorporate the remaining eight.These five online harms are intimate image abuse, image-based child abuse, doxxing, online harassment and online stalking.For the first three categories, victims of such harms can directly file a report with the OSC via their website which goes live on Monday.

Cranes had to be called in to lift two heavy vehicles from a ditch after a three-vehicle accident happened on the PIE towards Tuas on Saturday (June 27) at about 2.25pm.The incident involved one cement bulk tanker, a tow truck and a car. The director of several companies who left over 400 workers with unpaid salaries has returned to Singapore, and his passport has been impounded amidst ongoing investigations, said Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash. Ramu Palani Velu, a Singapore permanent resident, is listed as a director of KPA Engineering, SK Industries and VVR Plant Engineering, which did not pay 407 workers for months. He is also listed as a director on at least four other companies. Providing an update on the situation during a visit to Kranji Recreation Centre on Sunday (June 28), Dinesh said that Velu returned to Singapore on Friday.The minister of state met with about 280 workers from the affected companies there. «He is currently assisting us with investigations and his passport has been impounded,» Dinesh said.

SINGAPORE – Residents of Tiong Bahru's Seng Poh estate have decided to dump the familiar blue recycling bins for good.Following a three-month pilot that removed all of its recycling bins because they were often contaminated and misused, the estate will not be reinstating the bins commonly seen in housing estates.Instead, residents will take their recyclables to Tiong Bahru Community Centre (CC) and deposit them in a recycling machine launched on June 27.During the pilot, which came under a resident-led initiative called Love Tiong Bahru, residents took their recyclables to the CC, where six collection drives were held fortnightly in partnership with the estate's appointed public waste collector, Cora Environment.Conservationist and Tiong Bahru resident Kelvin Wang, who helped coordinate the initiative, said about 4,000kg of clean recyclables were collected over the six drives from April 11 to June 20. These included 1,500kg of cartons and mixed paper, 900kg of glass and 600kg of plastic.

A durian stall assistant who was given the passcode to the shop's safe while covering for his supervisor during this year's Chinese New Year stole $17,300 from it. He later gambled away the entire amount at Marina Bay Sands casino, reported Shin Min Daily News on Saturday (June 27). The 26-year-old Malaysian Tan An Sheng pleaded guilty to one charge of criminal breach of trust and was sentenced to five months in jail. The incident happened at Top Durian Station, located at Blk 154 Bukit Batok Street 11. At that point, Tan had been working there for around nine months. As the stall's supervisor went on leave, Tan was assigned to temporarily take over the role.He was given the safe's passcode for the first time and was responsible for tallying and reporting each day's earnings before depositing the money into the safe.Tan later stole a total of $17,300 from the safe on two separate occasions. The first time, he took a stack of $50 bills amounting to $1,000, and the second time, he stole the remaining $16,300 of cash. 

A 20-year-old Singaporean man escaped a major car crash near Kuala Lumpur with minor injuries, but two other passengers, both Malaysians, died.The accident happened on June 27 at around 5.10am, reported Chinese publication Sin Chew Daily on June 27. Preliminary police investigations indicate that the BMW was travelling at high speed before the driver lost control and crashed into a road divider on the Dutu-Ulu Kelang Expressway. The 22-year-old Malaysian driver, a student at the University of Queensland in Australia, and the 21-year-old front-seat passenger, who was a student at Sunway University, Selangor, were trapped in the vehicle and burned to death. As their bodies were «severely burned», their identities had to be confirmed through DNA testing. The Singaporean man, who was in the back seat, managed to escape the car before it caught fire and only suffered minor injuries to his hands and feet. He was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment. In a Facebook post on June 27, the Kuala Lumpur fire department shared that they received an emergency call regarding the road accident. 

A teenager who was seen riding his personal mobility device (PMD) down Keppel Road in the early hours of May 23 while doing the «superman» stunt, has been caught by Land Transport Authority (LTA) officers.In the video, the teenager is seen whizzing past at least two cars driving along the leftmost lane in vicinity of Keppel MRT station. He is also seen riding dangerously by extending his legs out into the air . The update was provided in a LTA statement on June 27, when the authority accounted for its nine-day joint enforcement operation with the police at hotspots including town centres, key congregation areas and selected residential locations such as Punggol, Sengkang and Yishun.

More than 380 offences involving illegal vehicle modifications were detected during Land Transport Authority's (LTA) recent islandwide enforcement operations.In a statement issued on its social media account on Friday (June 26), LTA said 70 vehicles were fitted with illegal exhausts, 80 vehicles were caught with improper lights, while 90 vehicles displayed improper number plates.LTA reminded motorists that it will continue to take firm action against offenders to keep Singapore's roads safe. Motorists who are found guilty of carrying out illegal modifications on their vehicles could face fines of up to $20,000 and/or two years' imprisonment.

A total of 250 offences were detected with 111 active mobility devices (AMDs) and motor vehicles seized during a nine-day joint enforcement operation by Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Singapore Police Force (SPF) targeting errant riders, the authorities said on Friday (June 26).The operation, which ran on non-consecutive days from June 1, zeroed in on hotspots including town centres, key congregation areas and selected residential locations.Friday marked the ninth and final enforcement day, during which officers detected 25 offences and impounded 15 devices in a night operation that spanned Sengkang and Punggol.

Workers are at the core of successes with bus services in Singapore, Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow said at Tower Transit's 10th anniversary carnival on Saturday (June 27).The carnival, which is being held at Bulim bus depot from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday, aims to celebrate 10 years since Tower Transit arrived in Singapore in 2016.The event also saw the unveiling of new uniforms for staff as well as various activities for families, ranging from magic shows to a bus wash experience.Speaking at the event, Siow reminisced how Singapore used to only have two bus operators.«The system worked, but we wanted more - a bus network that was better connected and more reliable, reaching more corners of Singapore, serving more Singaporeans.»We wanted bus companies that not only competed on how well they put commuters first, but more importantly, how well they take care of their workers."In 2015, Tower Transit became the first public bus operator to join SBS Transit and SMRT after three decades, commencing operations in May 2016.

SINGAPORE – A judge has denied a bid by the child protection authorities to place a nine-month-old infant, who had been removed from his parents, in foster care.Instead, the judge ordered the boy to be returned to the care of his mother, under the supervision of an approved welfare officer.The father's contact with the child is subject to the officer's approval.In a written grounds of decision published on June 22, district judge Chua Wei Yuan concluded that the child needed protection, but was not persuaded that fostering was the most ideal arrangement.The judge noted that state intervention, especially removing a child from a home, is a measure of last resort.In the current case, each parent was individually capable of taking care of the child.«The real concern was that the parents' relationship was so acrimonious that it would endanger (the child's) safety to place him around both parents at the same time,» said the judge.He said it was not unsafe to leave the child in the care of one parent at one time.
