The victim of an alleged murder in Choa Chu Kang was laid to rest on Thursday (May 28).The body of Chua Bee Ting, 21, was claimed by her parents and sent for cremation later that evening, reported Shin Min Daily News. They also returned to the crime scene to perform a ritual.The funeral started at Mandai North Crematorium around 7pm, attended by Chua's parents and three relatives.According to the Chinese daily, when staff removed the casket lid and her family viewed her remains, Chua's father broke down in tears.«You said you'd earn a lot of money after your internship, buy your favourite car, and give me money to spend,» he said.«You don't need to give Dad money. Dad can earn it, but you've gone so soon!»Her mother also sobbed: «I can't bear to part with her.»Family members reportedly all wept as they paid their last respects before Chua's casket was closed and her body cremated.Man charged with murderOn May 26, Chua was allegedly stabbed to death by Mohamad Faiz Umar in Lift A of Block 248 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2, sometime between 8.53pm and 9.22pm.The pair are believed to be ex-lovers.

Final moments with loved ones in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) may be fleeting, but nurses at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) have found a way to help patients and their families create long-lasting memories — hand sculptures.In a Facebook post on Tuesday (May 26), the hospital shared about Sumini, an ICU patient, and her family who participated in the activity.The hand sculpting exercise was started in 2025 as a «gesture of compassion», and turned into a care initiative to help families to cherish the final moments with their loved ones.«The ICU can be scary and painful place to be, but with a little compassion, kindness and innovation, it is also a place of where one can hold on to the memories of their loved ones,» the hospital wrote.Capturing final momentsIn a series of photos, TTSH showed the sculpting process, which began with Sumini's husband, Jumaat, tightly gripping her hand while a nurse helped with the moulding mixture.«Moments after their hands left the moulding mixture, they continued holding on to each others' hands,» the hospital wrote, adding that the couple had been together for over 50 years.

Seeing red and blue lights flashing behind him, this driver gave way thinking it was an emergency vehicle — but a closer look left him confused.The incident involved a black Toyota Voxy multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was travelling along Clemenceau Avenue at 8.15pm on Wednesday (May 27).In a video uploaded to SG Road Vigilante's Facebook page on Friday, the MPV can be seen approaching the rear of the dashcam driver's vehicle as an LED panel placed on the MPV's windscreen flashes red and blue lights.The dashcam driver slows down as they exit the underpass to allow the MPV to overtake. A second LED panel on the rear window of the MPV can also be seen flashing red and blue lights.At the next traffic stop, a clearer view of the rear LED panel appears to show slight blemishes in the lighting, with lines of dead diodes visible from the driver's perspective.The video ends with a screenshot of Land Transport Authority (LTA) records indicating that the car is a registered private-hire vehicle.«Gave way to a car with blue and red LED blinkers on Clemenceau Avenue, assuming it was a police vehicle,» the Facebook post read.

A 34-year-old male motorcyclist died after an accident along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) that involved a trailer.The accident happened at about 9.50am on Friday (May 29) along BKE towards the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), after Dairy Farm Road exit.Videos posted on social media show a Malaysia-registered motorcycle lying on its side between the two rightmost lanes of the expressway. The motorcyclist can be seen lying on his back a short distance away from his motorcycle. Debris was strewn along a 200-metre stretch of road.Meanwhile, the trailer was seen stopped along the road shoulder with a traffic police officer standing nearby.At least three Traffic Police (TP) expressway patrol cars, two TP motorcycles, and a crime scene investigation van were present at the scene.Responding to AsiaOne's queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said the male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.The police added that the 29-year-old male trailer driver is assisting with ongoing police investigations.

A teenager accused of licking a straw from a vending machine before putting it back has returned to Singapore after an overseas trip, and his case has been adjourned to June 26.French national Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, 18, had been allowed to leave Singapore for a school-related trip to the Philippines in May.Defence lawyer Kanthan Raghavendra of Kalidass Law Corporation had said in April that the trip was a requirement for him to graduate.Maximilien, a student at Essec Business School located at one-north, was expected to be away from May 2 to 25.On April 24, he was charged with committing mischief and being a public nuisance.He allegedly committed the offences at Goldhill Centre in Thomson Road on or around March 12.Maximilien allegedly licked a straw from an iJooz machine before putting it back in the straw dispenser. He allegedly filmed himself doing it and uploaded the clip on social media.Court documents stated that iJooz, known for its vending machines that serve freshly squeezed orange juice, had to replace all 500 straws in the dispenser after the alleged incident.

A safety inspection at a construction site for a two-storey terrace house in Thomson Green on Friday (May 29) uncovered a string of safety lapses that exposed workers to serious injuries.AsiaOne followed Ministry of Manpower (MOM) inspectors on the site visit and observed unguarded openings, building materials placed near unprotected edges, unguarded machinery, and cluttered walkways, among other lapses.There was also no safe evacuation route for workers in an emergency.The house being built includes an attic, but it was deemed too dangerous for the inspectors to access. The temporary staircase leading to the attic did not provide adequate footing and anyone who slipped risked sliding towards exposed rebars.«On the findings today, we will certainly take the necessary enforcement actions,» said Audrina Chua, director of MOM's occupational safety and health inspectorate. 

A 27-year-old man will be charged in court on Saturday (May 30) for his alleged involvement in a case of loanshark harassment in Bukit Batok.The police said in a news release on Friday night that they were alerted to the case at about 9.50am on Friday.The alleged incident took place at a home along Bukit Batok West Avenue 8.A photograph of the alleged crime scene provided by the police shows a debtor's note placed at the gate of the unit. The gate was also secured with a bicycle lock.The note reads: «Paying back debts is a matter of principle.»Officers from Jurong Police Division identified the man via follow-up investigations and with images from police cameras, and arrested him the same day.The bicycle lock and debtor's note were seized as case exhibits. The penalty for loanshark harassment for first-time offenders is a jail term of up to five years, along with a fine of between $5,000 and $10,000, and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.The police reiterated that they have zero tolerance for loan shark harassment.

Ride-hailing platform Grab, also Singapore's sixth taxi operator, announced on Friday (May 29) the implementation of two updates for its cross-border service under the enhanced cross-border taxi scheme. The updates are: a reduction in the required lead time for booking such rides and an automated notification for travellers to book their return trip.Passengers can now book cross-border rides in as little as 6 hours, down from the previous requirement of having to schedule their trips at least 12 hours in advance.Meanwhile, they will receive an automated push notification to book their return leg immediately after securing their initial journey.Grab on Friday also announced an increase in the discount for cross-border rides from the present 20 per cent to 30 per cent during the June school holidays — from May 29 to June 28.

Residents of Marine Terrace were greeted with the sight of brown water pooling around their estate on Thursday (May 28) morning, according to a video uploaded to TikTok by user Nicklawj.In the 27-second video, Nicklawj documents the extent of the flooding, beginning with a view of the area around a HDB block at 8am.The water pooled past kerb-level and seemed deepest around a construction site near Block 50A Marine Terrace. Water can also be seen spewing out from what is presumably a drain nearby.A supermarket in the estate was also affected by the flooding, with water stagnating under shelves.Responding to queries from AsiaOne, Singapore's national water agency PUB said it was alerted to a pipe leak next to Block 54 Marine Terrace at around 7.50am.The leak then caused water to flow to surrounding areas.Water supply to 12 units in the block was disrupted for around three hours.PUB distributed water bags to affected residents and deployed service crew to determine the location of the leak and carry out repairs.«We also worked with Marine Parade-Braddell Heights Town Council to clean up the surrounding area,» PUB said.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth arrived in Singapore on Friday (May 29) morning ahead of the 23rd Shangri-La Dialogue, where he is expected to meet counterparts and regional leaders.The United States Air Force Boeing 747-E4B carrying Hegseth landed at Paya Lebar Air Base just after 3.15am. He was received by US embassy staff and military officials. 

Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing met US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth on Friday (May 29).In a statement the same day, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said the defence minister met his US counterpart over lunch at Shangri-La Hotel. It added that the two leaders reaffirmed the mutually beneficial and longstanding bilateral defence partnership between Singapore and the US.They also discussed global and regional security developments, and discussed how both sides can strengthen defence cooperation, Mindef said, adding that Hegseth's visit underscores the strength of the bilateral defence partnership.«Mr Chan also expressed appreciation for the US' longstanding support for the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) training in the US, as well as for the SAF's technology access,» the statement read. 

A male teenager allegedly splashed red paint on the main gate and door of a home along Canberra Link, and also left a debtor's note outside the unit threatening to set it on fire.  Police officers arrested the 18-year-old alleged loanshark runner within six hours of receiving a report on Thursday (May 28).In a news release on Friday, the police said they were alerted to the case at about 7.05pm.The debtor's note outside the victim's home read, «Better call me to settle now. Next time come is burn!!»Officers from Woodlands Police Division identified the alleged perpetrator within six hours with the help of images from police cameras.The culprit is believed to be involved in three other similar cases of loanshark harassment along Sembawang Drive and Canberra Link, said the police.He will be charged in court on Saturday under the Moneylenders Act. The penalty for loanshark harassment for first-time offenders is a jail term of up to five years, along with a fine of between $5,000 and $10,000, and mandatory caning of up to six strokes.The police reiterated that they have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment.

Supermarket chain FairPrice will lock its prices on more than 500 essential items until end-August to assuage concerns over rising costs. The price freeze will begin from June 1 and include products such as rice, cooking oil, eggs, vegetables, fresh and frozen meat, milk, as well as senior and baby care products.In a statement on Friday (May 29), FairPrice Group said the move is «to ensure that putting food on the table and grocery runs for daily essentials remains one less thing for Singaporeans to worry about».It added that the measure aims to keep popular daily essentials «firmly within reach for local households».An earlier wave of price freezes by the supermarket chain involving more than 100 daily essentials was implemented in April after the conflict in the Middle East disrupted global supply chains.FairPrice Group chief executive Vipul Chawla said the price freeze in April proved effective in protecting household budgets.«However, dealing with prolonged global uncertainties requires a deeper, more sustained commitment,» he added.

SINGAPORE — The founder of Surrey Hills Holdings — best known for its Surrey Hills Grocer cafe chain — has been charged with multiple counts of cheating after she allegedly duped a woman into handing her more than $400,000.Pang Gek Teng, 37, who is no longer the chief executive of the company, was also charged on May 29 with one count of criminal breach of trust involving over $240,000, as well as one count each of attempted cheating and forgery.She now faces 12 charges in total.Pang, a Singaporean, allegedly duped a woman into handing her more than $400,000 in total over eight occasions between 2018 and 2019.Among other things, Pang is accused of cheating the woman of the largest amount on Jan 4, 2019, by pretending to be two people known as “Desmond” and “Derrick”.She is said to have assumed such characters to dupe the woman into believing that a private investigator had reported seeing her husband at a bank branch in Serangoon Garden, asking about her account.Pang allegedly claimed that the money was at risk of being frozen, and was to be transferred to “Derrick” for “safekeeping”.

Singapore is bracing for a higher risk of transboundary haze from June to October, driven by the impending development of El Nino and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). In a statement on Friday (May 29), the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) announced that El Nino conditions are forecast to emerge between June and July, which will likely result in warmer and drier weather.According to the MSS, the probability of an El Nino event occurring this year is over 80 per cent, citing warmer sub-surface ocean temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.Once fully established, the phenomenon will dictate regional weather patterns, particularly during the south-west monsoon season from June to September when the country receives typically lesser rainfall.Beyond dry conditions, El Nino is known to drive up local temperatures. While the initial strength of this incoming El Nino is expected to be moderate, there is potential to intensify into a strong event between August and September, said the two agencies. 

Singapore and Vietnam on Friday (May 29) inked new agreements that will strengthen cooperation in areas such as advanced manufacturing, doctoral training and the judiciary.The two countries — which upgraded their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP) in March last year — also established an agri-food trade task force and a strategic dialogue platform. Meanwhile, investment registration certificates were also issued for five joint industrial park projects in Vietnam.These, and a joint statement on supply chain resilience, were announced on the second of a four-day state visit by To Lam. The president of Vietnam, is making his first visit to Singapore since assuming office in April.

Come July, the completed Circle Line will drop terminal station names, using 'clockwise' and 'anticlockwise' labels to show train directions instead.To help commuters familiarise themselves with the new signage system, the enhanced wayfinding signs will be displayed at Promenade, Esplanade, Buona Vista and Paya Lebar stations from Friday (May 29).The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will also introduce the new wayfinding features through its social media channels, brochures and posters at the four stations, as well on the LTA website. The website will also feature a new interactive tool for commuters to virtually explore and familiarise themselves with the new wayfinding experience. Additionally, LTA staff will also be at these four stations from Friday until Sunday to assist commuters with the enhanced signs.«The completion of the CCL introduces unique operating features that require tailored wayfinding solutions to help commuters navigate the full loop more easily,» LTA said.

The principal of a Hong Kong school has resigned after he was earlier suspended for swearing at security personnel during a trip to Singapore.Lee Cheuk-hing, principal of San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School in Tuen Mun, tendered his resignation on Thursday (May 28), school manager Edmund Wong Chun-sek told the South China Morning Post (SCMP).Wong said that the school's committee will hold a meeting within the next few days to decide whether to accept the resignation, reported local media, adding that there are various factors to consider and that the welfare of their students is a top priority.Speaking to Hong Kong media outlet Dotdotnews, Lee apologised for his behaviour and said that he should have set a good example for the students.Lee said that he will reflect on his actions, and that he will fully co-operate with all arrangements and investigations by the school's governing body and the Education Bureau.He also apologised to the public in Hong Kong and Singapore in closing.

A 60-year-old man will be charged in court on Friday (May 29) for his alleged involvement in unlicensed moneylending activities.He faces 22 counts of conducting a moneylending business without a licence.Police said in a news release on Thursday night that they were alerted to a case of unlicensed moneylending on April 21, 2025 after a debtor was harassed by a loan shark for repayments.They established the identity of the man through follow-up investigations and later arrested him. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had provided a total of $57,000 in loans to at least ten borrowers in Singapore between June 2023 and October 2025. The loans ranged from $500 to $11,000.If found guilty of the said offence, the man could be jailed for up to four years, fined up to $300,000, and receive up to six strokes of the cane.Police reminded members of the public to stay away from loan sharks as they will not hesitate to carry out persistent and dangerous harassment acts on debtors and their families, such as setting fires, splashing paint at residences, and locking the gates using chains or bicycle locks to confine the occupants.

Tributes have poured in for the 42-year-old Universal Studios Singapore WaterWorld performer who died after a medical emergency during a training session.Willis Sia was a member of the local cosplay and Star Wars communities who often dressed up as Darth Vader.He played three characters in WaterWorld, including the show's antagonist Deacon, according to his Instagram account.Sia's Facebook page has been flooded with tributes from friends, with most referring to their experiences meeting him at cosplay events. Many commented to say that, despite the characters he played, Sia was one of the kindest people they knew.

There was continued respite for diesel vehicle owners in Singapore on Thursday (May 28) as two fuel companies — Esso and Sinopec — posted adjustments to their prices for diesel. Sinopec led the latest round of adjustments on Thursday afternoon, announcing a 5-cent reduction to its price for diesel. The move was mirrored by Esso in the evening.Similar to the last round of adjustments by Caltex and Shell on the eve of Hari Raya Haji (May 26), both companies also kept their petrol prices unchanged.Following the latest round of changes, the price of diesel now ranges from $2.71 at Smart Energy, to $4.37 at Caltex, Esso and Shell.Meanwhile, the price of the more popular 95-octane petrol ranges from $2.64 at Cnergy to $3.46 at Caltex, Esso, Shell and Sinopec, with SPC holding the middle ground at $3.42.

A fire broke out at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat in Yishun on Thursday (May 28) afternoon.The incident happened at about 4.20pm in the bedroom of an 11th floor unit at Block 653 Yishun Avenue 4.When AsiaOne reached the scene at about 4.40pm, at least one Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) combined platform ladder used for high-rise firefighting, two fire engines, and a light fire attack vehicle were present.A window panel of the unit was observed to be broken, with black soot seen on the external facade.  SCDF vehicles at Block 653 Yishun Avenue 4 on Thursday (May 28) afternoon. Officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the police K9 unit foiled an attempt to smuggle heat sticks and a vaporiser into Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint on May 9.In a Facebook post on Thursday (May 28), ICA said its officers directed a Singapore-registered rental car for enhanced checks.The 37-year-old male Singaporean driver only declared a single packet of cigarettes before the search of the vehicle.A total of 11,000 heat sticks along with a vaporiser were found hidden underneath the passenger seats of the car and inside the centre console.The driver was arrested and the case has been referred to the Health Sciences Authority for further investigation. 

To Lam, the president of Vietnam, will make a four-day state visit to Singapore from Thursday (May 28) — his first visit to Singapore since assuming office in April. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said the visit affirms the strong and multifaceted relationship between Singapore and Vietnam.Ties between the two countries were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP) in March last year. Under the CSP, both countries will focus on renewable energy, artificial intelligence, undersea cable development, and other critical infrastructure projects. A former career police officer, Lam rose through the ranks and held senior roles in Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security before becoming Minister of Public Security in 2016.

A 43-year-old male motorcyclist was taken to hospital after colliding with a car on Wednesday (May 27). Replying to AsiaOne's queries, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the crash at around 6pm.The accident involved a car and motorcycle at the junction of Commonwealth Avenue West and Clementi Avenue 2. The motorcyclist was taken conscious to National University Hospital, said the SCDF.The motorcyclist is assisting with ongoing investigations, said the police. A video of the incident posted by Facebook page SG Road Vigilante the same day showed vehicles turning at the junction.A motorcycle, travelling straight from the opposite direction, collides with a car making a right turn.

SINGAPORE — Unhappy that a girl had bumped into her along a crowded MRT platform, a woman shoved the eight-year-old against a wall, causing pain to the victim’s head and shoulder.On May 25, Ho Hui Ling, 44 was sentenced to five days’ jail for performing a rash act against the girl.Ho and the girl were walking along the platform at Buona Vista MRT station at around 9am on Jan 16, 2025, when the child “slightly bumped” into her.The child, who was with her mother, continued walking forward.Displeased, Ho walked towards the victim and forcefully shoved her.The child, who was then wearing her school attire, cried after she knocked into a wall.“The accused did not apologise for her actions and muttered words to the effect, ‘She pushed me, so I pushed her’ to (the child’s mother),” Deputy Public Prosecutor Caleb Looi stated in court documents.The victim did not seek any medical treatment after the incident.Ho was arrested on June 10, 2025, and charged in court soon after.DPP Looi had urged the court to sentence Ho to between one and two weeks’ jail, stressing that her offence involved a child.

A 22-year-old man who allegedly stabbed his former lover to death at a HDB block in Choa Chu Kang and then survived a fall from the 18th floor was on Thursday (May 28) charged in hospital with murder.Mohamad Faiz Umar, a Malaysian, was handed the capital charge by a magistrate at the National University Hospital.He is accused of killing Chua Bee Ting, 21, inside Lift A of Block 248 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2 sometime between 8.53pm and 9.22pm on Tuesday.The case will be mentioned again in three weeks, on June 18.If found guilty of his charge, Faiz faces the death penalty.In a statement on May 27, the police said they received a call for help at the location at about 8.55pm on May 26. The victim was pronounced dead on the spot by a paramedic, while the suspect was arrested for murder and taken to the National University Hospital.Police later seized a knife believed to have been used in the incident near an adjacent walkway at Palm Gardens condominium.Faiz had reportedly landed on a green dumpster placed in front of the block's centralised refuse chute after his fall.[[nid:736790]]

SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old Singaporean died in the early hours of May 27 after he was thrown off his motorcycle and an overpass in an accident on the Causeway.The accident happened on Jalan Tambak Johor — which is the Malaysian side of the Causeway in Johor Bahru — at about 3.20am on May 27, said the Johor Bahru Police South District in a statement uploaded on Facebook that night.Preliminary investigations found that the man, who was a nurse, was riding from the Bukit Chagar area of JB to the checkpoint at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex.He entered the car lane by mistake before attempting to turn back, against the flow of traffic, the police said.He is believed to have lost control and veered to the right-hand side of the road before colliding with a road barrier and skidding along a sharp bend, the police added.As a result of the collision, he was thrown from his motorcycle and fell about 10m from an overpass, the statement read.
