A 17-year-old teenager will be charged in court on Thursday (May 28) after he allegedly drove at speeds of up to 174kmh during a police pursuit before crashing into six vehicles.On Jan 16, traffic police officers were patrolling along Paya Lebar Road towards Upper Paya Lebar Road at about 10.50pm when the driver of a car allegedly sped off after spotting them.

A 23-year-old woman was left shocked after her GrabFood order allegedly disappeared just one minute after it was marked as delivered on Saturday (May 23).The woman, Aurora (who declined to give her real name), later shared the incident on TikTok, where it gained traction online, with many users also claiming to have experienced similar situations.Aurora told AsiaOne that she received a notification at about 12.39pm stating that her lunch order had been delivered. The rider also sent a proof-of-delivery photo showing the food hanging on the gate outside her home in Bukit Panjang.As she had opted for contactless delivery, Aurora claimed «I waited briefly before stepping out to collect the order so the rider would have time to leave first».However, when she checked at 12.40pm, just a minute later, the food was gone.Aurora said she initially «thought I had made a mistake» and panicked, prompting her to check everything from the unit number in the delivery photo to her address and whether the gate shown was actually hers, as she «never experienced anything like this before».

Singapore is rolling out a new set of measures to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions with stricter standards for commercial refrigeration and vehicle air-conditioning kicking in from July 2027.The new measures are intended to help Singapore reach its climate goals of reducing emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a media release on Thursday (May 28).These will apply to new refrigeration systems used in supermarkets from July 2027, and from July 2028 for air-conditioning in new passenger cars and light goods vehicles.Global warming potential (GWP) limits were first introduced by NEA in 2022 for household air-conditioners, refrigerators and water-cooled chillers used for large building cooling systems. They were developed in consultation with suppliers, users and recycling companies.In layman terms, the larger the GWP, the more that a given gas warms the Earth compared to carbon dioxide over a time period — usually 100 years.

A 22-year-old man will be charged on Thursday (May 28) with the murder of a woman, the Singapore Police Force stated in a press release on May 27.The incident happened at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Choa Chu Kang on Tuesday (May 26) night.He faces the death penalty if convicted of killing the 21-year-old woman, believed to be his ex-girlfriend.In an earlier statement on Wednesday morning, the police said they received a call for assistance at Block 248 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2 at about 8.55pm on Tuesday.The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic, while the suspect was arrested for murder and conveyed to the National University Hospital.

An elderly man was found deceased on the 10th floor of a flat in Block 174C Hougang Ave 1 around noon on Tuesday (May 26).According to a report by Shin Min Daily News, a blind resident surnamed Lin had noticed a foul odour two days prior, which only grew stronger.After other neighbours on the same floor came to enquire on the matter, 75-year-old Lin sensed something was wrong and called the police on Tuesday morning.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police stated that a 69-year-old was found motionless and pronounced dead on the scene. Based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is suspected, but police investigations are ongoing.Lin told the Chinese daily that the deceased resident had recently moved into the rental apartment and was living alone, while another neighbour surnamed Su said that the man had a son with special needs who occasionally came to visit.Su added that the last time she saw the deceased alive was five days ago.According to Lin, this was the second case of a body being discovered in their block in the span of a few days.

Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers literally brought out their axes and crowbars as they hacked and pried open parts of a Malaysia-registered bus during an enhanced check at Woodlands Checkpoint on May 15.In a video posted on its social media on Tuesday (May 26), ICA officers are seen hacking away at the buses' floorboard to reveal what appears to be modified compartments. Crowbars and hammers were also used to pry open parts of the bus chassis to reveal contraband cigarettes.ICA said the bus was directed for enhanced checks after its image analysts found anomalies in the scanned image of the bus.There, its search and examination officers extracted more than 3,200 cartons and 40 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes.AsiaOne understands that such profiling is typically conducted by ICA's Integrated Targeting Centre (ITC). The ITC operates 24/7 and leverages data analytics to conduct pre-arrival risk assessment of travellers, conveyances and cargo. SINGAPORE - A woman who assumed greater responsibilities on the homemaking front so her husband could build his business has been granted a third of the couple's matrimonial assets, which amounts to $2.2 million.In judgment published on May 20, High Court Justice Dedar Singh Gill noted that the woman had directly contributed around 5.9 per cent, or $400,000, to the asset pool, while the man provided around $6.4 million.He said that the man, 45, bore most of the indirect financial contributions as he had greater financial capacity, and his supplementary credit card enabled the wife to pay for household expenses.Meanwhile, the wife, 44, assumed greater responsibilities on the homemaking front.She looked after their three children, aged nine to 16, oversaw their studies and managed the household, including the supervision of their helper.«It is also notable that the wife supported the husband's career, having resigned from her job to commence work at the husband's company,» the judge said.

Pump prices in Singapore fell ahead of Hari Raya Haji as two fuel companies — Caltex and Shell — posted adjustments to its prices for diesel on Tuesday (May 26).In a price board update published at 4.30pm, Shell announced a 5-cent reduction to the price of its diesel. A Hong Kong school principal has been suspended from his duties amid an ongoing probe into his conduct, after a video of him swearing at two security personnel in Singapore went viral.Lee Cheuk-hing, principal at San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School in Tuen Mun, had told two security guards to «shut up» during a parking dispute at Safra Jurong on May 22.He was also filmed pulling faces and uttering profanities at the personnel.A member of the school board told Hong Kong media outlet HK01 on Tuesday (May 26) that the suspension was ordered after Lee and other teachers who were on the study trip submitted their statements on the matter.«I think the board as a whole feels that the principal's words and actions did not meet public expectations,» the publication quoted independent board member Edmund Wong as saying.[embed]https://www.tiktok.com/@asiaone/video/7643706282188360961[/embed]The school also issued an apology for the incident which caused «public concern and unease».

A 25-year-old man was taken to court on May 19 for allegedly trafficking etomidate-laced vape pods, also known as Kpods.Muhammad Danial Mohd Shahri was caught when authorities raided his home in Punggol on May 17 and found 39 vape pods.The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said in a statement on Wednesday (May 27) that the seized pods were sent for laboratory testing and confirmed to contain etomidate.The man was remanded for a week to assist with further investigations.His case was heard again on May 26, and proceedings have been adjourned to July 21.Under the new Tobacco and Vaporisers Control Act — which took effect from May 1 — etomidate and its analogues are listed as specified psychoactive substances.Importers now face jail time of between three to 20 years, and five to 15 strokes of the cane. They can also be fined up to $300,000, 30 times the previous amount.Suppliers can face a sentence of two to 10 years' jail, and two to five strokes of the cane. The fine is up to $200,000, a 20-fold increase.

The number of vehicles seized at land borders smuggling contraband items such as duty-unpaid cigarettes and liquor spiked in 2025.Singapore Customs on May 25 told The Straits Times that about 70 per cent of the vehicles seized are foreign-registered.In total, it confiscated 335 vehicles in 2025 – comprising cars, motorcycles, and heavy and goods vehicles – compared with the 300 vehicles seized in 2024, and 239 vehicles the previous year.“Vehicles used in conveying, delivering, or storing duty-unpaid goods will be seized by Singapore Customs.“When such vehicles are intercepted by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at Singapore’s checkpoints, the vehicles and duty-unpaid goods will also be handed over to (Singapore) Customs for investigation,” a Singapore Customs spokesperson said.Photos it supplied showed cartons of contraband cigarettes hidden in modified compartments and door panels in cars, and tucked in the bodywork of motorcycles.

A man who was sentenced to four years’ jail and six strokes of the cane in 2025 for molesting a woman in the nursing room of a shopping mall has been acquitted following his appeal.In overturning the conviction against Ankit Sharma on May 25, High Court Judge Christopher Tan said it was not safe to convict the appellant as there were several inconsistencies in the woman’s testimony.He found her evidence, specifically regarding why she continued to stay with the man even though she was supposedly distressed by his sexually explicit questions, to be “problematic”.There is a gag order in place against the disclosure of the woman’s identity.Sharma was accused of molesting the woman on the night of March 1, 2023, in the nursing room in Changi City Point by kissing her on the lips and by grabbing her hand and forcing her to touch him.The woman, who was then a recruiter at a recruitment firm, was meeting him for the first time to discuss a possible job opening.The two went to a restaurant in the mall at about 6.30pm and had alcoholic drinks.According to the woman, the conversation moved from professional topics to personal matters.

A woman in her 20s died after she was fatally stabbed at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Choa Chu Kang, while the alleged assailant — believed to be the woman's ex-boyfriend — was seriously injured after he fell from the block, AsiaOne understands.The stabbing happened at the 12th floor lift lobby of Block 248 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2, while the man purportedly fell from the 18th floor, landing in front of the block's centralised refuse chute (CRC). If you are a driver, you may want to pay attention to the newest online scam in town.In a Reddit post uploaded to r/singapore on Tuesday (May 26), user Stormagedd0nDarkLord shared a screenshot of what appears to be a phishing email in their inbox.This scam appears to be targeting users who have outstanding Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) fees by impersonating OneMotoring, the Land Transport Authority (LTA)'s online platform for motoring information and digital services.«We are writing to remind you that there is an outstanding ERP fee as associated with your vehicle. Based on our official records, this fee remains unpaid, and we kindly ask that you take a moment to review the details below,» the email reads.It stated the amount owed, case number and payment due date before directing the email recipient to click on a link to visit «the One Motoring website».«Everything you need to resolve this issue can be found there,» it claimed.AsiaOne was unable to verify where this link leads to.

A 21-year-old cyclist was taken to the hospital after colliding with a car in Woodlands on Sunday (May 24). Footage of the incident from the rear camera of a car was shared on Facebook by SG Road Vigilante the same day.The footage shows the dashcam car and a public bus stopped at a traffic junction in the third and first lane respectively.The dashcam car moves off as the light turns green, and a black car approaches the junction in the second lane.  Just as the black car is travelling through the junction, a cyclist crosses the road and collides with the car.The cyclist then falls to the ground as debris is sent flying.The car stops immediately.

Singapore has topped another global ranking — this time for being the safest country in the world for immigrants.The ranking, part of online remittance service Remitly's Immigration Index 2026, saw Singapore take first place with a total safety score of 95.4 out of 100, up from fifth place last year.The total safety score comprised a safety index score and a political stability score, both aspects in which Singapore outranked all the other countries evaluated. The report put Singapore's safety index score as 45.4, and a full 50 for political stability. Trailing closely behind were Iceland, Switzerland, Japan and Luxembourg, which took second to fifth place respectively.According to the data collected, Singapore has «consistently low crime rates, strong rule of law and highly effective public institutions». Remitly said that Singapore regularly ranks among the safest globally due to strict enforcement, high social trust and political stability.The Republic was also named as the 5th country with the largest immigrant communities in the world, rising two spots up from 2025.

SINGAPORE — A man who defaulted on his national service (NS) obligations for more than 21 years was on May 26 sentenced to three years’ jail and a fine of $3,000.Edmond Yao Zhi Hai, 47, immediately filed an appeal through his lawyers Mr Sunil Sudheesan and Ms Joyce Khoo from Quahe Woo & Palmer.His sentence comes after District Judge James Elisha Lee found Yao had evaded the whole of his full-time NS and post-Operationally Ready Date (ORD) obligations as he was past 40 years old when he was arrested in 2021.The offender was convicted in March following a trial for failing to report for enlistment, and in April for his immigration offences after admitting that despite being a Singaporean, he had repeatedly used his Indonesian passport to travel in and out of the Republic.The judge noted that Yao’s defence had rested in part on the notion that he had been travelling openly in and out of Singapore without any enforcement action by the authorities, which he argued meant that they treated him as an Indonesian citizen.

Six of the seven persons arrested for their alleged involvement in fraudulently registering SIM cards were brought back to the crime scenes at Aljunied and Geylang Roads on Tuesday (May 26) morning.The police had earlier arrested seven individuals, comprising a Singaporean and six Malaysians, aged between 19 and 49, during an island-wide enforcement operation between May 21 and 22.The operation targeted errant retailers who were allegedly engaged in the registration of postpaid SIM cards that were subsequently used by overseas syndicates in crime.Yeo Kian Tuck, 49, a Singaporean, and six Malaysians comprising of ⁠Dennis Chuah Sze Chun, 28, ⁠Brandon Chin You Yin, 19, ⁠Boon Yik Hui, 31, ⁠Lai Tak Shen, 29, ⁠Swee Meng Yi, 26 and Fan Weng Kin, 24 were arrested after they allegedly used the information of actual customers to register for additional postpaid SIM cards.These cards were then supplied to other people, and the mobile lines were subsequently used in impersonation scams.

From Jan 1, 2027, the names of two Catholic girls' schools in Toa Payoh will revert to their original names from 1854.The move was announced in a joint statement by the principals of CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) Judina Cheong and CHIJ Secondary (Toa Payoh) Genevieve Chye on Tuesday (May 26).This will allow the two schools, as the mother schools of the CHIJ family of schools, to «return to their historical identity and heritage», they explained.Following the reinstatement, which has been approved by the Ministry of Education, CHIJ Primary (Toa Payoh) will be named «Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (Primary)» and «Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (Secondary)» respectively.The name change will not affect the schools' mission, the principals said. «As the oldest girls’ Catholic schools in Singapore, we have nurtured generations of young women who are anchored on the CHIJ values of truth, justice, freedom and love. »We remain committed to our mission to develop IJ girls who live out our school motto, 'Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty'."

Interest rates for various Central Provident Fund (CPF) accounts — Ordinary, Special, Medisave and Retirement Accounts — will remain unchanged from July 1 to September 30, the CPF Board and Housing and Development Board (HDB) said in a joint news release on Tuesday (May 26).The interest rate for the Special, Medisave and Retirement Accounts (SMRA) will remain unchanged at the floor rate of 4 per cent per annum, as the pegged rate remains below the floor rate, the agencies said.SMRA interest rate is pegged to the 12-month average yield of 10-year Singapore Government Securities, plus 1 per cent, which was 3.09 per cent from May 2025 to April 2026. Meanwhile, the Ordinary Account (OA) interest rate will remain unchanged at the floor rate of 2.5 per cent per annum from July 1 to September 30, as the OA pegged rate remains below the floor rate of 2.5 per cent.This rate is computed based on the 3-month average of major local banks' interest rates, which was 0.32 per cent from February 2026 to April 2026. 

The chief executive officer of a now-defunct cryptocurrency platform, Hodlnaut, was on Tuesday (May 26) charged in court for fraud by false representation.Zhu Juntao, 36, was handed three charges and could face jail time of up to twenty years, a fine, or both, for each charge, if he is found guilty.Hodlnaut was a crypto borrowing and lending platform which allowed its users to deposit their digital tokens to earn interest.The Singapore Management University alumnus was also co-founder of the said online platform that purportedly had over 30,000 users worldwide before it became defunct in August 2022 following financial difficulties. The police said on Tuesday that Zhu allegedly instigated his employees to make misleading statements on the company's official Telegram group chat and in official emails sent directly to some of its users between May and July 2022, following a sudden price crash of TerraUSD (UST).According to the police, Hodlnaut had allegedly asserted in these communications that it did not have direct exposure to UST and/or did not suffer losses arising from the UST crash.

14 people have been arrested for providing illegal cross-border ride-hailing services, said Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling in a Facebook post uploaded on Monday (May 25).Additionally, the LTA and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) also conducted a joint enforcement operation on Monday at both land checkpoints into Johor Bahru, at Woodlands and Tuas.Sun noted that these operations come after recent enhancements to cross-border taxi services, which have allowed licensed cross-border taxis to drop off passengers anywhere in Singapore, and in several parts of Johor, since May 4.She said that this operation was part of «continued efforts to safeguard commuter safety and protect the livelihoods of our local point-to-point drivers from illegal cross-border transport services.»«We will continue to work closely with our Malaysian counterparts to improve cross-border travel arrangements,» she added.

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) on Monday (May 25) released its findings into the Chong Pang Integrated Development (CPID) construction mishap, three weeks after a falling metal bar crashed through a nearby HDB roof.An investigation report submitted by the appointed Qualified Person (QP) stated that the incident happened during dismantling works when a metal bar slipped from the workers' hands. «The bar then struck a nearby material stacking rack, which caused the metal bar to deflect out of the work area and damage part of the roof of (the adjacent) Block 103 (Yishun Ring Road),» SLA said in its update issued on Monday night.A QP is a registered architect or professional engineer who is authorised to submit building plans to authorities, ensure regulatory compliance, and supervise structural works. In this instance, the QP's role was to investigate the incident and recommend remedial actions. 

Two days after a 36-second video was posted on Reddit showing a rat scurrying about on a train car on the East-West MRT line, rail operator SMRT has completed its «investigations».A tongue-in-cheek social media post by SMRT on Monday (May 25) reads: «Following our investigations, we have traced the rat's likely path. »It appears to have entered Lakeside station after emerging from nearby bushes and running through the fare gates.«But that's not all. SMRT went on to declare that »Master Splinter" had travelled without paying the correct fare.

Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on Monday (May 25) met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the second day of his five-day visit to East Asian countries, including the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea.Both have been in their respective roles for over a decade. Wang was first appointed to the role in 2013, while Dr Balakrishnan became foreign minister in 2015.In a social media post on Monday, Dr Balakrishnan shared a video showing the two leaders making their opening remarks, in which Wang said Singapore and China should continue to strengthen the strategic relationship and communication.«Singapore and China might differ in size, yet we remain steady in our resolve to confront turbulence and volatility of the prevailing international landscape.»

Household egg brand Seng Choon is among five farms that will be affected by land-use changes in Lim Chu Kang.The other farms are Bollywood Farms, Gan Aquarium, Gallop Kranji Farm Resort and Malaysian Feedmill Farms, CNA reported.The land-use changes were announced in a joint statement by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA), the Ministry of Defence, the National Parks Board (NParks) and the Singapore Land Authority on Monday (May 25).«These changes arise from ongoing reviews of land use to meet Singapore's evolving needs,» the statement read.Land north of Lim Chu Kang, currently designated for defence, will be reallocated for agricultural developments in the future.Meanwhile, land south of Lim Chu Kang will be repurposed for defence uses.The statement explained that «careful planning» of Singapore's limited land is necessary to meet national needs, such as housing, defence, jobs, infrastructure and food production.Strategic land use changes are necessary to optimise scarce land resources to meet evolving national needs and ensure Singapore's continued growth and development, the statement said.

The Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) on Monday (May 25) launched its Beijing Representative Office in a ceremony officiated by Minister for Law Edwin Tong.This marks the SIAC's second representative office in China, as the first — in Shanghai — celebrates its 10th year in China.In his speech at the office's opening, Tong, who is also Second Minister for Home Affairs, said the opening of SIAC's second representative office in China signifies a deepening connection with and in China.He noted that since the establishment of the Shanghai office, Chinese parties are now among the SIAC's most important users, while Chinese arbitrators and practitioners have become an «increasingly integral part» of the SIAC community.SIAC's value propositionAgainst the backdrop of China's rapidly expanding trade footprint, significant outward investments — reaching US$174 billion (S$222 billion) in 2025 — and its role in global infrastructure and engineering projects — reaching US$289 billion in 2025 — dispute resolution mechanisms become necessary.

Like other dog lovers, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong joined residents and their pets at a community event in Choa Chu Kang on Saturday (May 23), where dogs took centre stage.In a Facebook post on Sunday, PM Wong shared highlights from the event themed «Woof Woof Day Out» which took place at Stagmont Park as the usual venue at Limbang Park is currently undergoing upgrading.«The good news (is that) the refreshed park will include a new dog run when works are completed later this year!» said PM Wong who is also MP for the Limbang division of Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.A video shared on the prime minister's social media also showed him interacting with dogs and residents and joking with a resident whose pet was well behaved, prompting the owner to reply that it was «in front of you» that the dog was behaving.
