What started as a National Day decoration has turned into a reminder of why AI-generated content needs a second look. A banner that drew criticism online for appearing to feature an Indonesian flag instead of the Singapore flag has since been replaced.Kampong Chai Chee Community Club (CC) said on Wednesday (July 22) that it had received feedback about an AI-generated banner that was recently displayed as part of the estate's National Day decorations, according to a Facebook (FB) post on Kampong Chai Chee CC's official FB page.The community club explained that the banner had been «created and paid for by residents» hoping to celebrate Singapore's National Day. It was meant to bring «festive cheer» to the community. Many of the volunteers involved were seniors who had generously contributed their time and effort and were unaware that the AI-generated banner contained inaccuracies, it added. 

A shophouse fire in Farrer Park forced the evacuation of 40 people on Wednesday (July 22) morning.The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the blaze on the fourth storey of 562C Serangoon Road at about 9.30am.The fire was extinguished within an hour using two water jets. An aerial water jet from a combined platform ladder was also deployed to prevent the fire from spreading,Damping-down operations are ongoing.When AsiaOne reached the scene at about 11.10am, multiple fire and police vehicles were seen along the road.A small cloud of smoke was seen wafting from the shophouse.The owner of a nearby dog care centre, who gave his name as Yee Jun, said a colleague had heard popping noises and saw smoke emerging from the fourth-storey shophouse unit at about 9.20am.Flames engulfed the unit shortly afterwards. The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) unveiled new tech initiatives on Wednesday (July 22) that incorporate artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality and automation to guard against evolving drug threats in Singapore.Speaking at the biennial CNB Workplan Seminar held at the Singapore Expo, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Sim Ann highlighted the growing global drug issue and the threat it poses to Singapore.She said: «The world drug problem is not a distant one. Our strategic position as an international air and maritime hub exposes us to the full force of this global threat.»Against this backdrop, Sim unveiled CNB 2030, a transformation effort that will see the agency adopt new technologies across operations, from drug detection to officer training and the rehabilitation of drug supervisees. SINGAPORE — The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) has imposed over $6.8 million in taxes and penalties on errant nightclubs for improper tax declarations of flower garland sales.The authority told The Straits Times that it has taken action against eight such nightclubs since 2021.IRAS had on July 3 published an article about the tax declarations for flower garland sales at nightclubs, as part of their efforts to help businesses understand their tax obligation.These garlands are bought by customers and presented to performers at the club as a show of appreciation.The performer usually receives a percentage of the amount received for each garland.IRAS said flower garland sales are taxable supplies, and that GST applies to the full value of the flower garland sales, not just the portion retained by the nightclub.It added that it conducts regular risk-based tax audits across all industries to ensure accurate tax filings.

A 28-year-old Malaysian man, allegedly a member of a money laundering syndicate, was arrested on Tuesday (July 21) after he was arrested by Malaysian authorities in Kuala Lumpur and handed over to officers from the police's new Cyber Command.In a news release on the same night, police said the State Courts of Singapore had issued a Warrant to Arrest (WTA) for the man.This follows a two-month-long operation, codenamed Operation Frontier+ III, which targeted transnational scams.The operation was conducted in partnership with nine foreign law enforcement agencies.Police said the man's syndicate was disrupted in March 2026, acting on information provided by Maribank.The man was arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police's (RMP) Commercial Crime Investigation Department at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Monday.

A 22-year-old will be charged in court on Wednesday (July 22) for his alleged involvement in several cases of loanshark harassment islandwide. The police said in a news release on Tuesday night that they were alerted to a series of such cases between July 18 and 20.The victims of these cases had the main doors of their residential units splashed with red paint and the walls along the common corridor of the affected units were scribbled with loanshark-related graffiti.A photograph of one of the alleged crime scenes show a debtor's note scribbled on a wall outside a residential unit.The note reads: «O$P$ This time last warning. Next time I sure burn house already! Don't try my patient!!! Your family and neighbours sure cry (sic).»Officers from Bedok, Clementi and Woodlands Police Divisions identified the man through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from police cameras.He was arrested on Tuesday and a mobile phone was seized as case exhibit. 

Two Marsiling volunteers have been commended for administering first aid to an injured motorcyclist following a road accident along the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE), remaining with him until emergency responders arrived.According to a Facebook post by Marsiling Bravehearts, the incident took place on Saturday (July 18) night, after volunteers Alex and Neil from the Marsiling Community Emergency and Engagement Committee had completed their National Day Parade duty.The duo reportedly came across the traffic accident, where officers from the Singapore Police Force Public Transport Security Command were already managing the scene.Seeing that the motorcyclist had been injured, Alex and Neil stepped forward to assist while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.Despite a language barrier, Neil helped translate and communicate with the injured rider while Alex assessed his condition.The rider was reportedly suffering from severe leg pain. Drawing on their first-aid training, the volunteers treated the injury as a potential fracture and stabilised him until Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel arrived.

A recent bus ride with his three children and two strollers prompted one father to question whether Singapore's public transport provides enough space for commuters with different mobility needs.Bobby Sim wrote in his Facebook post on Sunday (July 19) that on most days he has «been lucky because people are kind», but recalled an instance where a bus driver informed him that one stroller would need to make way if a wheelchair user needed to board. One wheelchair user eventually did board the bus, but Sim said he was unable to fold up a stroller as his children were sleeping in them. Fortunately, the wheelchair user, he added, patiently said that he would wait for the next bus. «We were very thankful. A 48-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly molesting another man in a toilet along Woodlands Avenue 1 on Tuesday (July 21).The victim alerted the police around 1am on Tuesday.The man allegedly pulled the victim into the toilet, locked the door and touched him inappropriately.Officers from the Woodlands Police Division conducted ground enquiries, using police cameras and security camera footage in the area to identity the man.He was subsequently arrested within four hours of the report being made, and will be charged in court on Wednesday for aggravated outrage of modesty.If found guilty, he will be caned and jailed between two and 10 years.[[nid:740611]]khooyihang@asiaone.com

A Mercedes electric vehicle (EV) was seen ablaze with smoke billowing from it at Vista Point mall in Woodlands on Tuesday (July 21).In multiple images uploaded to the Singapura Channel Facebook page, a red Mercedes EQA can be seen parked just before a bend near Vista Point as fire surges from within the seats.A separate video circulating on Facebook also shows thick black smoke billowing from the vehicle as onlookers keep their distance.An emergency vehicle from the Singapore Civil Defence Force can also be seen approaching the scene as the video ends.

Former Potong Pasir MP Sitoh Yih Pin and media veteran Patrick Daniel have been appointed as Singapore's non-resident high commissioner to Maldives and Sri Lanka respectively, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced on Tuesday (July 21).Sitoh, 62, was a three-term People's Action Party (PAP) MP for Potong Pasir SMC, winning the 2011, 2015 and 2020 General Election.He retired from politics after the 2025 General Election and currently serves as a board member of the People's Association.Sitoh is also an independent and non-executive director of China Taiping Insurance (Singapore).He graduated with an accountancy degree from the the National University of Singapore in 1987 and later completed the chartered accountancy programme in 1990.Sitoh is married to Wong Wei Leng. They have two children.

A foreign domestic helper allegedly fled her employer's home after suffering abuse and sought help from passers-by, according to a video posted on social media.The clip, purportedly obtained from an employer, was posted on Monday (July 20) with the caption: «We got this video from our helper.» The incident reportedly took place at Block 150 Bedok Reservoir Road, although it was unclear when it occurred.In the video, a visibly shaken woman is seen speaking to two members of the public, who also claimed to be foreign domestic helpers. Appearing distressed and on the verge of tears, she attempted to explain what had happened in Punjabi, but the two women were unable to understand her.The helper then reportedly wrote the words «Help me call police» on a piece of paper, in an apparent effort to communicate.The person who submitted the video claimed that the woman had fled because she could no longer endure abuse from her employer. 

A power bank in a commuter's bag caught fire at Woodlands MRT station and smoke was seen billowing from it, while passengers were waiting for the train on Monday (July 20). A photo shared with AsiaOne shows a pink handbag lying on the platform floor with smoke rising from it, while the platform appears hazy.Another video shows at least six TransCom officers at the scene.A commuter, identified only as Christina, told Stomp she was on her way to work when she noticed smoke and the smell of burning plastic at around 8.45am, while taking the escalator from the North-South Line platform to the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) platform. «The whole place was filled with smoke and reeking of burning plastic,» Stomp quoted her as saying. Christina said the staff extinguished the fire by the time she reached the TEL platform.In response to AsiaOne's queries, SMRT Trains president Lam Sheau Kai said that a commuter had been waiting for a train on the TEL when the power bank in her bag started emitting smoke.

Tan Boon Liat Building, a freehold industrial property in Outram, has been sold en bloc to a Kingsford Group unit for $950 million.The latest collective sale tender was launched after more than 80 per cent of owners agreed to a reduced reserve price of $1 billion. A 59-year-old man died after a fight with his neighbour at Block 55 Lengkok Bahru on Sunday (July 20), with another 59-year-old man arrested at the scene.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police said they were alerted to the incident at about 4.45pm and found the victim lying motionless at the lift lobby on the 16th floor. The Singapore Civil Defence Force had taken a person to National University Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.Preliminary investigations found that the two men knew each other.Residents told The Straits Times that the pair had allegedly been involved in a longstanding feud, with arguments between them a common occurrence.One resident, who has lived in the block for about four years, said the two men would often shout Hokkien vulgarities at each other in the mornings.«No one thought it would escalate to this,» the neighbour was quoted as saying.Often return home drunkA resident, who declined to be named, told Lianhe Zaobao that the victim had moved into the block over two years ago and would often return home intoxicated.

What was supposed to be a family holiday for some Chinese tourists in Singapore took a painful turn when a glass coffee table allegedly shattered in their hotel room, injuring a four-year-old girl. A shard of glass allegedly became lodged in the girl's foot, and she had to be taken to hospital. Her family is now seeking an $8,000 refund for their hotel stay following the incident. A woman, who gave her surname as Wang, told Shin Min Daily News that her family checked into Momentus Hotel Alexandra on July 6 and later decided to extend their stay to July 22.The 38-year-old accountant from Xiamen, China, also asked to move to an executive suite. The hotel arranged for them to make the switch on July 11.When the family moved to their new room, Wang said a hotel staff shifted the glass coffee table in the living room to set up a sofa bed, which they did not need.Wang later moved the table to create more space for her daughter to play.«I was sitting on the sofa and my daughter and younger sister were standing next to the coffee table when the glass suddenly shattered,» Wang claimed.

A stranger has been praised for his dedication after making three trips to a HDB flat to return a lost wallet, finally handing it over to its owner on Saturday (July 18).Photos shared in a TikTok post by user @.good.life46 on Monday shows doorbell camera footage of the stranger outside the owner's house on separate occasions. The first two photos were taken during the day while the remaining photos were taken at night. The owner expressed his thanks to the stranger, whom he addressed as Riad, for finding his wallet and returning it «completely intact, including all the cash inside». The owner recalled that the man had visited his unit twice before — once in the afternoon and again at around 10pm that day — but found that he was not home. The owner of the wallet didn't say which estate he lives in.The Good Samaritan returned for a third time on Saturday and was finally able to return the wallet to the owner's family. The owner added that when the man was offered a reward for his efforts, he «politely but firmly refused». 

Forgetting to pay for a bowl of fries could have easily gone unnoticed, but one content creator chose to return the next day and settle the bill, earning praise for her honesty.Natalie Naploes, a 23-year-old local content creator, uploaded a series of videos to her TikTok on Monday (July 20) about the incident.The incident took place on Saturday after Naploes and her friends had spent a night out at Clarke Quay and found a kebab store selling loaded fries, which are French fries topped with a combination of meat, cheese and vegetables.The stall owner told Naploes that her order would take 15 minutes, prompting her to call a Grab while waiting.Her Grab arrived around the same time that her order was ready, leading her to rush to the taxi stand after picking up the food.She only realised that she had run off without paying after a friend asked her how much the fries were.«I unintentionally robbed a kebab store,» she joked, adding that she felt bad. Unable to find any information about the kebab store online, Naploes made her way back to Clarke Quay the next day to find the stall.

A 52-year-old personal mobility aid (PMA) user was taken to hospital after he allegedly collided with a bus along Corporation Drive.He had driven his mobility device from the sidewalk onto the road, hitting a Tower Transit bus and getting jammed under it, Shin Min Daily News reported on Monday (July 20).He subsequently fell, resulting in a head injury, the report said.A video uploaded to the Sgfollowsall Instagram page shows a man lying beside bus number 49 beside a sidewalk as three paramedics tend to him.The paramedics then lift him up, put him on a stretcher and wheel him towards the rear of an ambulance parked ahead of the bus as the video ends.Responding to queries from AsiaOne, police said that they were alerted to an accident involving a bus and a PMA along Corporation Drive at around 9.45am on Sunday.The male PMA rider was taken unconscious to hospital, while a 68-year-old male bus driver is assisting with ongoing police investigations.The rider was subsequently taken to National University Hospital, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

There will be no by-election for Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC following the resignation of former Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Assoc Prof Faishal Ibrahim on Monday (July 20), said People's Action Party (PAP) chairman Desmond Lee.Explaining the considerations, Lee, who is also Minister for Education, stated that existing MPs — Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng, Minister of State Goh Pei Ming, four-term MP Tin Pei Ling, and first-term MP Diana Pang — will «step up, step forward».«We will make sure that all existing MPs step up, step forward, look after the residents of Kembangan, look after all the communities in Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, including the Malay/Muslim community,» Lee said. He added that further announcements will be made as to how the GRC team can be further strengthened, with the goal of serving all residents.

SINGAPORE — Two tourists walked into a Chinatown jewellery store on June 19, when one of them spat out a fake diamond and stole a real one worth nearly $200,000.Indian nationals Mangroliya Manojkumar Kurjibhai, 41, and Serasiya Milan Ramnikbhai, 30, booked their flights home and were attempting to clear immigration at Changi Airport that evening when local authorities arrested them.Officers then recovered the genuine diamond from Serasiya's haversack, the court heard.Mangroliya was sentenced to two years, two months and two weeks' jail on July 17 after pleading guilty to a theft charge. Serasiya's case is pending.State Prosecuting Officer (SPO) Yip Cheng Yee told the court that before June 19, the pair planned to steal the diamond from Dianoche jewellery store in Kreta Ayer Road in Chinatown.Court documents did not disclose how they knew about the precious stone, but they commissioned a counterfeit diamond in India, matching its specifications and serial number.The SPO said both tourists arrived in Singapore on June 19.

An influencer has come under fire from netizens after playing a prank that involved hiding his friend in a suitcase and getting a passer-by to help him place it in his car boot.Influencer @aimrun — who goes by Imran — posted his now-viral prank on his TikTok and Instagram accounts on July 18.The one minute and 22 second-long video shows Imran’s friend getting into a black suitcase before Imran zips it up. Imran then runs up to a man in a camouflage t-shirt, asking: “Brother, brother, brother, can help me carry something heavy into my car?”The man, who appears to be a stranger, follows Imran to his car as the influencer says he had a “bad night” with his friend.As the two men lift the suitcase up, a moaning sound can be heard coming from the suitcase, stunning the passer-by. Imran tells the voice to “shut up” while guiding the passer-by to place the suitcase in the boot.

Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan is making a five-day visit to Manila from Monday (July 20) to attend the 59th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings.In a statement on Monday, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said the visit will include Dr Balakrishnan's participation at the post ministerial conferences (PMC), 27th Asean Plus Three Foreign Ministers' Meeting (FMM), 16th East Asia Summit FMM, 33rd Asean Regional Forum, as well as the commemorative activity of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.Sharing further details on the AMM, MFA said the foreign ministers will reaffirm their commitment to Asean unity and centrality, as well as discuss ways to advance Asean integration and community-building initiatives under the Philippines’ chairmanship theme of “Navigating Our Future, Together”.MFA added that the ministers will also continue discussions on strengthening regional trade, food and energy security, accelerating the green energy transition, and strengthening cooperation in new growth areas such as the digital economy.
