Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing will make a two-day working visit to Jakarta, Indonesia, from July 14 (Tuesday) to July 15.Chan, who had previously served as Singapore's military attache in Indonesia when he was in the Singapore Armed Forces, will jointly launch the Indonesia-Singapore Defence Alumni initiative with his Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin. The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a news release on Monday that the alumni is intended to bring together officers from the Singapore Armed Forces and Indonesian National Defence Forces who have worked together or completed a study stint in Singapore and Indonesia respectively.It added that the alumni will allow officers from both countries to maintain their personal relationships forged through shared experiences, and, in turn, support the bilateral defence relationship between both countries.Singapore's Chief of Defence Vice Admiral Aaron Beng and his Indonesian counterpart General Agus Subiyanto will also participate in the launch as co-presidents.

A 46-year-old man was arrested for dangerous driving causing hurt after a collision involving a car and a motorcycle in Jalan Besar on Sunday (July 12).Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force said they were alerted to an accident at the junction of Kitchener Road and Jalan Besar at about 9.40pm. A video of the incident shared on Facebook page SGRV Admin shows a car travelling through the junction while the traffic light in the opposite direction was red.A motorcycle was seen travelling straight through the junction before colliding with the car. The motorcyclist was later seen lying on the road, appearing to be in distress.A 28-year-old male motorcyclist was taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said the police. A 46-year-old male car driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing hurt. Police investigations are ongoing. 

A Gojek passenger has filed a police report against her driver for allegedly making inappropriate and sexually explicit remarks towards her during the ride.The 26-year-old passenger, who goes by the username huatyousay, uploaded a second video on Sunday (July 13), a few days after first sharing footage of the incident. The original video, which includes footage of the driver's inappropriate remarks, including a request for a threesome, has since garnered over 320,000 views across TikTok and Instagram.In her latest update, the passenger shared that she lodged a formal police report on July 11 and is awaiting an officer's follow-up.She added that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) also reached out to her and was looking into the matter.More women come forward with allegationsIn her second video, the passenger said that several other women reached out with similar experiences after seeing her post.«Same kind of conversation, in that moment I couldn't even react or think straight that I should video it down,» one user commented, adding that she had been a passenger in the same driver's car.

A 29-year-old Singaporean man was charged in court on Monday (July 13) over his alleged involvement in a case of criminal trespass and voyeurism at a commercial building in Whampoa. The man, who cannot be named due to a court-imposed gag order protecting the victim's identity, faces one charge each for criminal trespass and voyeurism. The alleged offences were committed at 1.57pm on October 6, 2025.Charge sheets seen by AsiaOne indicate that the man allegedly trespassed a female toilet on the second floor of an industrial building along Bendemeer Road and intentionally observed a woman by climbing over a toilet cubicle partition. The incident happened near the premises of Singapore-based news and media company AsiaOne.The 29-year-old man, who was unrepresented but accompanied by his parents, remained expressionless when the charges were read out.He told the court that he intends to plead guilty to the charges.How the case unfoldedUpon being notified of the incident, AsiaOne's safety and security team alerted the police and retrieved CCTV footage from the building's surveillance cameras.

Foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) met with their Myanmar counterpart in Bangkok on Sunday (July 12), with the ministers reaffirming the central importance of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) peace plan, and the need for «demonstrable progress» to be made, said Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.Tin Maung Swe, who was appointed foreign minister by junta chief Min Aung Hlaing after the country held what many described as a fraudulent election, provided the foreign ministers with an update on developments in Myanmar, in his capacity as a «senior representative» of the Myanmar government.The meeting was reportedly the first in-person engagement between Asean foreign ministers and Myanmar's top diplomat since a 2021 military coup.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will be conducting a military training exercise in the Kallang area from July 13 to 14. In an announcement posted on its social media on Sunday (July 12) afternoon, the Singapore Army said that the exercise will take place from 6pm on Monday to 5.30am on Tuesday.It added that the exercise will take place in the vicinity of Kallang, Kallang Wave Mall and Old Kallang Airport. «Members of the public may observe increased military activities and hear loud sounds due to helicopter operations, as well as the use of blanks and pyrotechnics during the exercise,» the advisory stated.For the public's safety, the exercise area will be cordoned off, but vehicular traffic will not be affected, according to the SAF.The public is advised not to be alarmed and to keep clear of the cordoned off areas.

A passenger was blindsided after her Grab driver allegedly locked the doors at the end of the ride and sprang an extra charge of $2 for wet tissue on her.Local model and actress Fiona Fussi took issue with how the driver did not earlier communicate that the item is not free-of-charge in a TikTok video she posted on Friday (July 10).Calling it «one of the worst Grab experiences ever», Fussi said the «stressful» encounter began when she asked the driver if he had any tissues in his car.«He was really snappy and he said no,» she said.«I was like, 'Oh okay, never mind.'»About five minutes later, the driver supposedly said he had wet tissue.Fussi, who thought that the gesture was «nice», accepted it.To her surprise, the driver requested payment for the piece of tissue upon reaching her destination and allegedly refused to let her exit the car until she paid.«It's not about the $2, it's not expensive. The driver of a Toyota Alphard multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) was recently caught aiming a laser pointer at another car.Dashcam footage of the incident submitted to Facebook Group SG Road Vigilante shows vehicles moving slowly along a stretch of an expressway on July 8.As the MPV closes in on the car, its driver is seen using his laser pointer several times.At one point, the glare was so strong that the whole video turned green. The glare from the laser pointer's beam caused the video to «turn green». SINGAPORE – The taxman has caught 279 high-income earners to date for using sham arrangements such as setting up private companies to receive their income to avoid paying more tax.Out of this group, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) probed 124 cases from 2021 to 2025 and clawed back $49 million in additional tax.All but one of these cases involved taxpayers extracting profits as tax-exempt dividends or interest-free shareholder loans.Unlike tax evasion, which is a crime involving hiding and falsifying income, tax avoidance by channelling funds through various arrangements is not an offence, but these moves can result in additional taxes and surcharges being levied if there is no real purpose for these transactions other than paying less tax.Cases involving such taxpayers were highlighted recently when the High Court dismissed the bid of three doctors to challenge the decision of IRAS to levy more taxes on their total incomes.

A 14-year-old cyclist was rescued from underneath a car in Jurong by members of the public who banded together to lift the vehicle.The traffic accident occurred at the junction of Jurong East Central and Jurong Gateway Road at about 1.25pm on Saturday (July 11), the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told AsiaOne.In a video posted by Facebook user Toto Momz that afternoon, several men are seen attempting to hoist a grey car along a slip road.The camera pans to show more passers-by joining the group, and an onlooker is heard saying that a boy is trapped under the car.With about 10 people holding up the car, another two or three men carefully pulled the cyclist out, to the relief of all.The boy was then carried to the roadside by rescuers, who ensured he laid down on the grass and checked his physical condition as they waited for the ambulance to arrive.

A 67-year-old man will be charged in court on Monday (July 13) after he allegedly misappropriated more than $600,000 from his employer.Police said in a news release on Sunday that they received a report from the man on December 10, 2025, claiming that he had misappropriated company funds from his employer over a two-year period.Officers from Bedok Police Division established through their investigations that the 67-year-old had misappropriated over $600,000 in cash from bank deposit bags entrusted to him in the course of his employment.According to the police, the offence was uncovered after company staff discovered the discrepancies during an audit.The man will be charged in court on Monday with the offence of criminal breach of trust by an employee.If found guilty, he could be jailed for up to 15 years and fined.[[nid:740139]]editor@asiaone.com

Lookalike derivatives of known names are held as well,” said a spokesperson.

President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will make a three-day state visit to Malaysia from July 13 to 15.The visit is at the invitation of Malaysia King Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, and will be President Tharman's first state visit to Malaysia since becoming Singapore's ninth president in September 2023.Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a statement on Saturday (July 11) that President Tharman's visit follows that of Sultan Ibrahim's state visit to Singapore in May 2024.During his state visit, President Tharman will travel to Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. In Kuala Lumpur, he will be accorded a state welcome ceremony at the Istana Negara, after which President Tharman will call on Sultan Ibrahim and Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah.They will also host a state banquet in President Tharman's honour. While in Kuala Lumpur, he will receive a courtesy call by Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. 

A 42-year-old man was sent to the hospital on Saturday (July 11) morning after a knife incident at a commercial property along Lavender Street.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) stated that the incident took place at about 9.35am at 114 Lavender Street. According to the agencies, the man was conveyed conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.The said address is the premises of mixed-used commercial development CT Hub 2.AsiaOne understands that a woman, who is believed to be known to the man, was also present at the scene — where the man is said to have inflicted the injury on himself following a dispute with her.Sources at the scene told AsiaOne that the duo are believed to be in a relationship and that the incident took place, but AsiaOne has not been able to independently verify this.The incident allegedly took place in the vicinity of a pub there. Employees from the public entertainment outlet, who were waiting for their private-hire rides, did not wish to be interviewed when approached by AsiaOne. Police investigations are ongoing. 

A 26-year-old woman died in the hospital after she fell from height at a Housing and Development Board (HDB) block in Yishun on Saturday (July 11) morning.The incident happened at about 1.10am at Block 257 Yishun Ring Road.When AsiaOne reached the scene at about 7.30am, some blood could still be seen along the concrete pavement beneath the back of a stack of flats. Conservancy workers from the town council were seen washing down the area.

SINGAPORE - About 15ha of forest in Clementi's Sunset Way area will make way for new public housing developments in the coming years.The Housing Board on July 10 announced plans for the 23ha Maju Forest. The board had commissioned an environmental study for the greenfield site - land that has never been built on - which has been largely zoned for residential use since 1980.HDB said about 8ha of the site, which is bounded by Brookvale Drive, Clementi Road and Sunset Way, will be retained to «provide refuge for wildlife and facilitate fauna movement».This includes a natural freshwater stream and vegetation that has high biodiversity value, as well as the area around the Old Jurong Railway Line where a new 4km-long nature trail is being studied.Nature groups were engaged throughout the planning process, the board added.

SINGAPORE - Locally grown vegetables from at least three farms here will soon no longer be available at supermarket giant FairPrice, The Straits Times has learnt.The decision, part of FairPrice's regular product review, highlights the tussle between providing customers with the best value-for-money products and the national effort to support local growers so as to improve food resilience, say industry players.The affected urban farms are Artisan Green, SG Veg Farms and Netafarm - a farm and R&D facility in Neo Tiew that has decided to significantly scale down following the news.The farms had been supplying vegetables such as Asian leafy greens and kale since the early 2020s.FairPrice Group told ST that it gathers feedback from suppliers and farms and data from stores to better understand evolving consumer demand, identify opportunities to improve its assortment and offer the right vegetable varieties at the best value.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF) search-and-rescue unit Rescue 10 was activated on Friday (July 10) night to evacuate a man onboard a ship who required urgent medical attention.In a Facebook post on Saturday, RSAF said its personnel «safely airlifted» the patient to the new helipad at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). An eyewitness, Andrew Ong, said he sighted the helicopter approaching SGH at about 10.35pm. A video posted by Ong shows the helicopter descending towards the new helipad, with emergency vehicles seen waiting near the landing area.

SINGAPORE — Eleven former Certis Cisco enforcement officers were on July 10 convicted over accusations of misappropriating confiscated products or keeping stolen items such as vapes and contraband cigarettes.The 11, which included a female former officer, had committed the offences when they were at the Health Sciences Authority's (HSA) enforcement unit under the Tobacco Regulation Branch on a temporary transfer.The former officers who were convicted are: Muhammad Khairul Izzul Shah Abdul Karim, 38; Muhammad Fitri Jaffar, 39; Muhammad Haziq Khamzah, 32; Nurazmy Yussof, 33; Sufian Mohamed, 45; Mohamad Aidil Abu Bakar, 47; Mohamed Fiaros Mohamed Zakaria, 43; Muhamad Hazim Mohamed Jalil, 34; Muhammad Faddley Abdul Wahid, 38; Muhammad Syafiq Tahar, 39; and Olivia Chan Wei Ying, 39.A spokesperson for Certis said that the individuals involved in the case are no longer with the company.«Certis does not condone such criminal acts and we expect our officers to uphold the highest level of discipline and professionalism,» the spokesperson added.

While many retirees enjoy a slower pace of life, one 68-year-old Tampines resident has taken it upon himself to use his photography skills to catch litterbugs and parking violations in his neighbourhood.The self-declared mission has earned Tan Qiangsheng (transliteration) both praise and criticism from residents.Tan, who moved in a decade ago, told Shin Min Daily News that he started noticing residents committing acts such as littering cigarette butts, spitting on the floor and parking outside designated spaces.Unable to tolerate such behaviour, Tan reportedly began photographing the incidents as evidence.It is not known exactly which unit Tan lives in.According to Tan, he spends «every morning, afternoon and evening» observing from his window and taking photographs of any alleged offences before submitting them to the authorities.Besides taking photos and videos, Tan also writes down his observations. Once a month, he reportedly heads down to the National Environment Agency, spending over an hour travelling there, to submit the compiled records and evidence. 

The taxi driver who lost consciousness while driving on the East Coast Parkway has died, police said in an update on Friday (July 10).During the Monday incident, the 73-year-old male driver was ferrying a woman named Winnie Lee and her six-year-old son. The number of marriages registered in Singapore continued to decline in 2025, with couples marrying later, according to figures from the Singapore Department of Statistics (SingStat).In a statement on Friday (July 10), SingStat said 24,688 marriages were registered in 2025, down 6.2 per cent from 26,328 in 2024.The average number of marriages registered annually between 2023 and 2025 stands at 26,442, lower than the 27,156 recorded between 2016 and 2019, reflecting a longer-term downward trend.Compared with a decade ago, marriage rates for men and women also fell.In 2025, there were 39.1 marriages per 1,000 unmarried males aged 15 to 49, down from 44.2 in 2015. Among unmarried females in the same age group, the rate fell to 38.1 per 1,000, from 41.1 a decade earlier.

He went in with hopes of fixing a toothache, but left with holes in his mouth, wallet and bank account. A man surnamed Li from Shaanxi province in China visited Datuanyuan Dental Clinic last September to seek a cure for his aching tooth, South China Morning Post reported on Friday (July 10).The 63-year-old told Chinese media that the clinic had put out advertisements claiming that patients would be able to «get a dental implant in the morning and eat meat in the afternoon», and even «have a complete set of teeth» to «live past 100».Believing their advertisements, Li got on a car that the clinic provided, even receiving a free check-up.'Only had 30 yuan left'Convinced by the clinic's various offerings, Li placed his faith — and his teeth — in their hands.However, what was supposed to be a quick fix became a nightmare for Li as the remaining 12 teeth he had in his mouth were all removed, with the clinic placing 10 artificial teeth in Li's mouth, Guangming Online reported.Li was also charged 18,800 yuan (S$3,573.03) for the procedure, draining his bank account and leaving him 6,200 yuan in debt.

A woman was left shaken after allegedly spotting someone peering through a hole while she was using a temporary female toilet during Home Improvement Programme (HIP) works at her home in Yew Tee.In a Facebook post on Friday (July 10), user Nahk Naze shared her account of the incident, which she said took place at the temporary shower facilities serving Blocks 563 and 564 along Chua Chu Kang Street 52.According to the post, she noticed a hole in the toilet wall and allegedly saw someone behind it. When she shouted, she saw someone run away.Nahk Naze alleged that the hole «was deliberately made to peep» and that it led to a storage area accessible only to workers.In an update posted in the comments, Nahk Naze said HDB officers visited Block 563 at about 11.30am on Friday, after the incident was reported to them.It is unclear if a police report has been lodged.

One person was taken to hospital after a traffic accident involving a van near the Kuo Chuan Presbyterian school zone in Bishan on Friday (July 10).Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to an accident along Bishan Street 13 at about 1.10pm. Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Primary School students are typically dismissed at 1.25pm. The school is about 700 metres away from the accident site. The person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.The Straits Times reported that the injured person is a female pedestrian who was hit by the van.When AsiaOne reached the accident site, a silver van with a cracked windscreen was seen overturned near a sheltered walkway.A section of the shelter was damaged in the accident.Debris, including a tyre, were scattered across the scene, and police officers were seen inspecting the area.

SINGAPORE – Customers using their DBS or POSB cards to shop at Giant and Sheng Siong supermarkets islandwide can enjoy $3 off select brands of rice and eggs every Saturday, starting July 18.The DBS Saturday Savings programme, which will run until Aug 29, is part of the bank’s $10 million initiative to help Singaporeans manage cost pressures, it said in a statement on July 10.Each customer is limited to one redemption per item per day.The offer is valid for Giant Farm Fresh Eggs (30s) and Giant Jasmine Fragrant Rice (5kg) from Giant, and Egg For You Fresh Eggs (30s) and Happy Family Fragrant Jasmine Rice (5kg) from Sheng Siong.There are 90,000 redemptions up for grabs each week, available on a first come, first served basis and while stocks last.The offer cannot be combined with other promotions, discounts, vouchers or CDC vouchers.“Our commitment was to provide practical benefits that help Singaporeans stretch their dollar,” said Calvin Ong, head of DBS’ consumer banking group. “By offering these savings on Saturdays, we hope to make these grocery trips a little more affordable.”

Two lorries were towed away by the traffic police (TP) for failing to install speed limiters by the July 1 statutory deadline.In a news release on Friday (July 10), police said TP officers conducted checks at selected companies during a two-day islandwide enforcement operation, from July 1 to 2. Two SBS Transit staff members have been commended after helping a man recover the $20,000 cash he left behind on a bus on Monday (July 6). The public transport operator praised assistant interchange supervisor Lalastella Tse and bus captain Giam Ming Huat for for their «honesty, vigilance and teamwork» in a Facebook post on Friday.The passenger, identified only as Ma, had accidentally left a paper bag containing $20,000 in cash on bus service 851 on Monday, according to the post. He later realised the bag was missing and frantically called Yishun Interchange for help. Tse, who picked up his call, recalled being «shocked by the large amount». She quickly traced the lost bag to a bus being driven by Giam. At the same time, another passenger had alerted Giam to the unattended bag and the bus captain had kept it safe to return it at the interchange.Ma later arrived at the interchange to verify his belongings and was «overjoyed» to find the full sum intact, said SBS Transit.He revealed that the money was to pay his workers' salaries. 

A total of 550 people, aged between 16 and 83, are being investigated by the police following a 10-day crackdown on scams and unlicensed moneylending activities. Police said in a news release on Friday (July 10) that the operation was conducted by officers from the Bedok Police Division from June 29 to July 8.The 341 men and 209 women being investigated are believed to be involved in over 1,800 cases of scams and unlicensed moneylending activities.Of these, some 418 people were allegedly involved in scam-related activities such as e-commerce, investment, job, rental, phishing and loan-related scams as money mules, resulting in losses of over $14.8 million.They are now being investigated for offences of cheating, assisting another to retain proceeds from criminal conduct and unauthorised disclosure of Singpass access code.The remaining 132 persons are being investigated for their alleged roles in unlicensed moneylending activities.According to the police, the transactions involved amounted to more than $2.3 million.
