The number of fires at coffee shops has remained largely constant between 2021 and 2025, with about 15 to 19 cases recorded annually, said Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam on Tuesday (July 7).Shanmugam, who is also Coordinating Minister for National Security, was responding to a parliamentary question from Workers' Party (WP) MP Sylvia Lim (Aljunied GRC), who asked if coffee shop fires at Housing and Development Board (HDB) blocks are an area of increasing concern.She also asked if fire standards at coffee shops are monitored by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).In his written reply, Shanmugam stated that food and beverage establishments, including coffee shops, are subject to a suite of requirements under the Fire Code.These include measures to reduce the risk of a fire from cooking-related activities, and to ensure the safety of people in the coffee shop during a fire, he explained.The SCDF also carries out enforcement checks, in the form of both scheduled visits and unannounced inspections based on feedback, to ensure compliance.In addition, annual fire safety checks are conducted at coffee shops by HDB.

Singapore is setting aside $800 million over the next five years as part of efforts to unlock new possibilities to transform the transport ecosystem so as to strengthen its global connectivity and competitiveness.The planned investment, under the National Research Foundation's Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2030, was announced by Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow in Parliament on Tuesday (July 7), as he spoke in support of a motion on reinforcing Singapore's position as a global transport hub.Explaining the impetus, Siow noted that transport is one of Singapore's largest economic sectors, contributing about a tenth of its gross domestic product (GDP), and 7 per cent of jobs held by Singaporeans. The sector keeps people and goods moving by air, land and sea.«Transport is the foundation on which our economy is built,» Siow said, as he recapped the Economic Strategy Review's recommendation that Singapore must further strengthen its role as a connected global hub.

Over the past three years, about 85 per cent of full-time national servicemen (NSFs) transport operators attained their civilian driving licence, said Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing on Tuesday (July 7).Chan, who is also Coordinating Minister for Public Services, was replying to a parliamentary question by Workers' Party MP Kenneth Tiong (Aljunied GRC), who asked for the number of NSFs who get civilian driving licences through NS annually.The first-term MP also asked if the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) would consider extending driver training and civilian licensing to NSFs in vocations with periods of low operational activity, and whether those who pass their Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) driving test can convert their qualification on the same probationary terms as new civilian drivers, in lieu of the mileage requirement tied to licence conversion.In his reply, the defence minister reiterated that NSFs' priority must be their military duties and operational training so as to meet the SAF's operational requirements.

Drivers who intentionally use their vehicles to endanger others and cause death or grievous hurt may face harsher penalties, if amendments to traffic laws are passed.The Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill was tabled in Parliament on Tuesday (July 7) by Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Sim Ann, proposing several amendments to the law.Aside from harsher penalties to drivers for dangerous or careless driving, the Bill also includes stepping up enforcement for the holding of mobile devices while driving and lowering alcohol level limits for drink-driving.According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), traffic fatality rates have risen by about 24 per cent between 2021 and 2025, while traffic violations have gone up by around 38 per cent in the same period.Presently, drivers that deliberately endanger another person using a vehicle and causing death can only be convicted for murder or culpable homicide if it is proven beyond reasonable doubt that he intended to kill, or knew that his actions are likely to cause death.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has approved 272 screenings of the Teochew version of Dear You and will consider approving more if the film distributor applies for additional screenings to meet audience demand.Tan Kiat How, Senior Minister of State for Digital Development and Information, shared this in Parliament on Tuesday (July 7) while responding to questions from MPs about IMDA's decision to screen the Mandarin-dubbed version, instead of its original Teochew version, on account of the Government's bilingual policy.«Guidelines on language use in media are implemented by IMDA. A 29-year-old motorcyclist was taken to the hospital after crashing into a concrete wall along the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) on Sunday (5 July) morning.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police said it was alerted to the accident at about 6.35am. The incident occurred along the KPE in the direction of the Marina Coastal Expressway, before the Nicoll Highway exit.According to the police, the motorcycle was believed to have skidded on its own.Dashcam footage posted on Facebook page, Roads SG, show the motorcyclist travelling in the left lane before moving into the centre lane to overtake a car. After completing the manoeuvre, the motorcyclist returned to the left lane but appeared to lose control and veered into the concrete wall.The impact caused both the rider and the motorcycle to fall onto the road. A 52-year-old man was taken to hospital after a car believed to have self-skidded along Balestier Road plunged into a roadside drain on Sunday (July 5).Footage of the aftermath shared on social media show a silver sedan lodged in a roadside drain along a slip road leading to an expressway.Police officers and ambulances were also seen present at the scene.Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to an accident involving a car believed to have self-skidded along Balestier Road at about 8.20pm.The accident occurred at a slip road leading to the Central Expressway towards the Ayer Rajah Expressway, said the police.A 52-year-old male passenger was taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) foiled an attempt to smuggle 3,000 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes into Singapore via a Malaysia-registered lorry, according to a Facebook post on July 7.In the post, ICA said search and examination officers at Tuas Checkpoint directed a lorry for enhanced checks and found duty-unpaid cigarettes within the cargo consignment on June 26.ICA officers seized the cigarettes and arrested the 40-year-old Malaysian driver in connection with the case. The suspect and all exhibits have been referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.ICA reaffirmed its commitment to «facilitating trade and travel while keeping Singapore’s borders safe and secure».[[nid:739028]]laili.abdeen@asiaone.com

Errant cyclists and unsafe riding behaviour is in the spotlight again after a group of cyclists was caught on dashcam footage riding through at least two red lights in Pasir Ris on Sunday (July 5).Footage of the incident posted by TikTok user Zan M shows a group of at least seven cyclists riding along Pasir Ris Drive 3 at about 9.30am.They were first spotted running a red light at the junction outside Pasir Ris Bus Interchange, where pedestrians were crossing with the lights in their favour.Meanwhile, two buses waiting to make a right turn had to make a narrower turn to keep a safe distance from the group.Moments later, the same group is seen again running a red light outside Pasir Ris Park.

Elite troops from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) completed a six-day joint exercise on Monday (July 6), culminating in them jointly launching an attack on an enemy.The exercise, codenamed Exercise Chandrapura, saw personnel from the SAF's 1st Commando Battalion and the TNI's Special Forces Command exchanging professional knowledge on commando tactics, techniques and planning procedures, according to a news release by the Ministry of Defence (Mindef).Personnel from both armed forces also conducted exchanges on close-quarters combat, fast-roping, rappelling and an airborne static line jump.The interactions culminated in a field training exercise at Safti City, where both armies jointly launched an attack on an enemy objective.

A man was found dead inside his HDB flat in Bukit Batok after neighbours noticed a two-week pile of newspapers and a foul smell, prompting them to call the police on Sunday (July 5) morning.A female neighbour of the man who lived at Block 14, Bukit Batok Street 21 told Shin Min Daily News that an older man lived in the unit and neighbours had started to notice a foul smell some days back.As her unit is further away, she only smelled the stench when the wind blew.She added that neighbours had a discussion about the matter on Saturday and decided to check on the unit again the next day before calling the police.On Sunday morning, the stench was even stronger. Outside the man's unit was a pile of newspapers dating back to June 21.Police officers arrived within 10 minutes of neighbours calling for assistance.A crime scene investigation vehicle was also activated as officers combed through the unit.A police hearse took the man's body away in the afternoon, the Chinese daily reported.One neighbour told Shin Min that the man was quiet and rarely interacted with others, while other neighbours said he lived alone.

Steal their oil.»In the video, the motorist is seen holding up what appears to be a Singapore passport against a Ron95 petrol nozzle inserted into a car at a Caltex petrol station in Malaysia.He then shows that some 23.6 litres of Ron95 had been purchased at a cost of RM60 (S$19.03). Video unlikely to be taken recentlyGiven that Ron95 is heavily subsidised by the Malaysian government, the video has naturally sparked criticism from netizens from both sides of the Causeway.Some Malaysian media outlets, and one from Singapore, were quick to report on the incident.However, the video clearly shows that the price per litre is RM2.54, which was the price of unsubsidised Ron95 for the week of January 22 to 28 this year.

SINGAPORE – Content creator Renae Cheng, 31, has spent the past two years dealing with AI-generated videos on TikTok of her being kissed and groped by a stranger.The overseas-based harasser, who created the deepfake video, also bombarded her with rape and death threats after she refused to share an acquaintance’s contact details.Cheng, who is married with an 11-month-old daughter, frequently has to field awkward questions from confused relatives about the videos. “Some of them are upset and may not understand that the videos are fake,” said Cheng.She had reported the videos to TikTok multiple times, but was told that the content did not breach the platform’s community guidelines.The videos remain online, but Cheng hopes they will be deleted soon. She will be taking her case to the Online Safety Commission (OSC), which started operations on June 29.The commission offers an alternative for those who encounter inadequate, delayed or unhelpful responses from social media platforms over harms encountered online.

SINGAPORE – For business associate Tan Hui Xin, commuting on the North East Line (NEL) from Kovan to Dhoby Ghaut during the morning rush hour has long been a struggle.“The NEL is a nightmare in the morning, and I used to have to wait at the platform until a train arrived with enough space for me to squeeze in,” said the 30-year-old.In recent months, she has noticed a “slight improvement” when she boards a train at about 8.45am, after a free off-peak ride scheme began on Dec 27, 2025.“It’s somewhat better now. I usually get to board immediately,” she added.Connecting residents in the north-eastern part of the island to the city centre, the NEL is one of Singapore’s most heavily utilised rail lines.Based on operator SBS Transit’s business update for the first quarter of 2026, the line sees an average of 610,814 passenger trips each day. Armed with nothing but a bandana and his bare hands, 42-year-old Clarence Chua rescues bees, scooping them from nests into wooden boxes to relocate them, sometimes to his own backyard.«What I like about them is if you respect them and you don't threaten their safety, they are totally OK with you being at close quarters with them,» Chua said.When residents of tropical Singapore find bees nesting in their houses, they typically call pest control, which can exterminate nests in minutes for about $80 to $150. But Chua has convinced a growing number to allow him to rescue the bees for between $100 and $500.In the last six years, he has safely relocated an average of 100 nests each year, which comes up to about 6 million bees saved. Humane relocations entail moving the whole nest, keeping the queen bee, babies and worker bees intact in their colony. They are then moved to three apiaries that he manages, one of which sits in his own backyard.Chua has rescued bees from all sorts of exotic places, from a «spirit house» in a condominium to a plane's engine, which could not take off until the swarm was relocated.

Singapore's law enforcement agencies conducted checks on more than 17,000 people in June, resulting in 1,776 suspects being hauled up for investigations.They comprised of 1,173 men and 603 women, aged between 15 and 85.Of these, 519 were arrested.«The operations form part of the police's sustained efforts to clamp down on unlawful activities and deter would-be offenders,» said the police in a news release on Sunday (July 5).More than 5,600 officers from the seven police land divisions, the Traffic Police and the Criminal Investigation Department were involved in over 1,300 operations against a wide range of offences. The police worked closely with the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the Land Transport Authority and the Health Sciences Authority (HSA).The offences targeted included vice activities, traffic violations, vaporiser-related crimes, immigration offences and illegal employment.Public entertainment venue raidsThe police conducted several raids against public entertainment venues, including one on June 23 led by the Central Police Division.

A lorry driver who was trapped in his seat after a pile-up involving five heavy vehicles on the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on Friday (July 3) was freed by rescuers with hydraulic equipment.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident along AYE towards Tuas before the Benoi Road exit at around 11.15am.Footage of the aftermath showed four lorries and a trailer involved in the chain collision, with a fire engine at the scene.According to updates on the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) X account, traffic congestion stretched to Jurong Pier Road, with motorists advised to avoid Lane 3.Three male lorry drivers and a trailer driver, aged between 28 and 55, were conveyed conscious to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.Another person was assessed for minor injuries but declined to be taken to hospital, said SCDF.Police investigations are ongoing.

A male youth was taken to hospital after being found allegedly vaping inside a toilet cubicle at Safra Jurong on June 23.Footage of the incident was posted by @sgfollowsall on the same day, and showed the young man sitting on a toilet bowl looking dazed.He is seen blowing white smoke from his nostrils, and holding what appears to be an e-cigarette in one hand and a phone in the other.His arm is also seen twitching, while the person filming can be heard asking if is alright.Upon further prompting, the youth responded by raising his right hand which was gripped around the vape-like device.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the incident at around 1.35am on June 23.One person was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, SCDF said.Meanwhile, Safra Jurong said a youth was found in the male toilet on the second floor at about 1.43am, in response to queries from 8World.They added that a member of the public called for an ambulance, and the youth was assisted by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

A 46-year-old male motorcyclist was taken to hospital after an accident in Bedok that led to five bus services being diverted.The accident, involving a van and a motorcycle, happened at about 12.50pm on Saturday (July 4) along Bedok North Avenue 3. The motorcyclist is lying in the middle of the two-lane road as passers-by tend to him.A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) ambulance is later seen arriving at the scene.

SINGAPORE – Two separate turbulence incidents on Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot flights in June 2025 injured eight cabin crew members, two seriously, based on investigation reports released about a year later.An SIA jet descending towards Shanghai Pudong International Airport encountered turbulence on June 27, 2025, seriously injuring one cabin crew member and causing five others to suffer minor injuries.Separately, a Guangzhou-bound Scoot flight that departed Singapore on June 10 the same year experienced turbulence while cruising over the Ho Chi Minh flight information region in Vietnam.One cabin crew member was seriously injured and another had minor injuries.The accidents were disclosed on June 23 and 24, 2026, when the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) published its final investigation reports.About 4.5 hours into the Shanghai-bound SIA flight, at around 5.11pm, the Airbus A350-900 jet began its descent, with the crew preparing the cabin for landing.Moderate and heavy precipitation was detected on the weather radar display shortly after.

The MRT's Circle Line has come a «full circle» with the opening of Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road stations — and is expected to benefit more than 10,000 commuters, who will enjoy shorter train rides, said Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow at the Circle Line 6's (CCL6) opening ceremony on Saturday (July 4).«So today, finally, people can stop asking the Land Transport Authority (LTA) why the Circle Line is not a circle,» the acting minister quipped, as he recalled the challenges of the CCL6 project, which has taken more than 30 years in the making.Siow explained that although CCL6 was only announced in 2013, it was «in the original design». However, the project could not start until land became available.For example, Cantonment station, a 28m-deep underground station located beneath the former Tanjong Pagar railway station, could only be announced when the former railway station and tracks were returned to Singapore in 2011.
