In celebration of Father's Day, the Bishan-Toa Payoh town council shared a tribute on Saturday (June 20) featuring fathers and sons sending heartfelt messages to their families, with some becoming emotional. The two-minute video showcased several employees — many of whom have left their homes and families to work in Singapore — as well as town council staff including supervisors, executive and officers. The post aimed to honour the men who «keep our estate running» — rain or shine, day and night, and noted that they are fathers and sons bound by «hard work, sacrifice and mutual respect».According to the post, some of those featured are separated from their children, working to support families back home while others juggle long hours as they raise their kids in Singapore. One employee, who goes by the name Salim, whose father recently died said: «Dad, I love you. I miss you so much, Dad.» Another employee Shamin, promised his son Ibrahim that he would surely meet him when he returns home next year. He added: «I will come for you and for my father. I will come for all of you. I will see you then.»

Five people were evacuated from a condo in Geylang after a charging power-assisted bicycle (PAB) caught fire on Sunday (June 21).In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was alerted to the incident at Block 9 Lorong 26 Geylang at around 5.35pm that Sunday.Checks by AsiaOne show that the address corresponds to Casa Aerata condominium.Based on preliminary investigations, the fire was caused by a PAB battery that was left charging in the living room of a unit on the seventh floor.SCDF personnel managed to extinguish the fire using a hosereel and a compressed air foam backpack.Five people from neighbouring units were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure and no injuries were reported.Cai Yinzhou, MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, made a Facebook post on the same day, saying that he visited the condo after noticing the sound of sirens and smoke.He added that the area below the burning unit was cleared in anticipation of the window, which eventually smashed from the heat.

SINGAPORE — After inroads were made in reducing Singaporeans’ sugar and saturated fat intake, a drive to reduce sodium consumption here is also gaining momentum.Efforts include an upcoming campaign by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) in the last quarter of 2026 that seeks to normalise the behaviour of consumers asking for less salt and sauces.The campaign also seeks to encourage consumers to choose lower-sodium options.“We need to have this ‘normalising ask’, and when more people ask for it, maybe (at) some point in future, we can do low sodium by default,” said HPB chief executive Tay Choon Hong in an interview with The Straits Times.Coupled with the Nutri-Grade labelling scheme introduced in end-2022 for pre-packaged beverages, and subsequently expanded to include freshly prepared beverages a year later, more consumers have shifted towards healthier drinks.Under the scheme, drinks with less sugar content and/or lower saturated fat are graded A and B, and may voluntarily carry the Healthier Choice Symbol.Drinks that exceed a specific threshold are graded C and D, with an advertising ban for those graded D.

Three seconds may be all you need to pick up fallen food, but any kind of contamination requires far less.The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has rubbished the urban legend of the «three-second rule» in a Linkedin post on Sunday (June 21) - a common myth claiming that food dropped is still safe to eat if it is picked up within that time frame.The agency was responding to a viral video shared on TikTok by user Rina57521 on May 27 showing a diner pick up noodles dropped on a coffeeshop table and eating them.In the video, the diner uses chopsticks to pick at a few strands of noodles on a table, accidentally dropping it in an attempt to scoop them up.Undaunted, the diner picks up the noodles in a second, more successful attempt, putting the noodles in their mouth.«Come on, please don't do this,» SFA wrote in their post.«Once food is dropped on an unclean tabletop, the surface of the food item would have been contaminated by bacteria.»And there is no such thing as the «three second rule» either…"Online, users also seemed to agree with SFA's perspective on the matter.

A petrol kiosk attendant in Malaysia was seen in a video stopping the driver of a Singapore-registered vehicle from pumping subsidised RON95 petrol.The incident allegedly took place at a petrol kiosk in Klang, Selangor, on Saturday (June 20), according to a video posted by Facebook group named Malaysia-Singapore Border Crossers.In the video, an Audi bearing a Singapore licence plate can be seen parked at a fuel pump while a man believed to be the driver can be seen standing beside the vehicle.Halfway through the clip, a station attendant approaches the car and appears to speak to the driver before removing the fuel nozzle from the car's filler neck.The yellow nozzle revealed the driver was dispensing RON95 petrol, which is subsidised by the Malaysian government and reserved for Malaysia-registered vehicles.The driver was then seen looking through his wallet as the attendant gestured.It is unclear from the video whether any fuel had been dispensed before the attendant intervened.

A part-time maid was caught nicking cash from a homeowner in Bedok, who had specially set up a «trap» after suspecting that the helper had previously stolen from her.Myanmar national Nant Aye Thandar Soe, 30, was sentenced to two weeks' jail after she pleaded guilty to the theft on June 15.Court documents seen by AsiaOne stated that the woman had stolen three $50 banknotes in a Bedok HDB flat on May 28.According to Shin Min Daily News, Nant Aye Thandar Soe worked as a part-time maid with home services company Helpling Singapore, and has been cleaning the victim's home since September 2025.The helper arrived at the Bedok flat for the usual weekly cleaning on May 28, and noticed an unzipped bag in one of the rooms.She went through the bag, and took $150 from a wallet left inside.About an hour later, her employer checked her belongings and discovered some money had gone missing.$50 notes planted in walletNant Aye Thandar Soe presented four $50 banknotes from her pocket, three of which the homeowner recognised as hers through the serial numbers on the notes. 

A boy was taken to hospital on Saturday (June 20) morning after a food court signboard at Rivervale Mall fell on him.A video of the incident first surfaced on a one-day-old TikTok account within an hour of the occurrence. The incident took place at about 10.30am at Food Junction's Rivervale Mall outlet, as independently verified by AsiaOne.The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), responding to AsiaOne's queries, confirmed that they received a call for assistance at the said location and a person was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital.AsiaOne understands that the injured person is a boy.

A Singaporean family is requesting for eyewitnesses after their son allegedly got into an accident with a buggy at Incheon Airport, Seoul, on Wednesday (June 17).Khoo Boon Wee, a father of three, alleged that their son, Kyle, was returning from the toilet when he was struck by an airport buggy, according to his Facebook post on Thursday.As they were caring for their other children, Kyle was returning alone and they did not see the incident happen themselves, Khoo stated.The accident purportedly left Kyle with injuries including concussion and facial injuries including a fracture of his right orbital roof, which is a fracture at the top of his right eye socket.Although Korean Air staff were prompt to offer assistance — including following the family to the hospital and arranging accommodation and an alternative flight — they insisted on not providing an accident report on record, he alleged.Moreover, Khoo also claimed that staff told him their liability «is limited to their goodwill gesture in Korea» but they «cannot be liable for the expenses in Singapore».

SINGAPORE - Around December 2025, administrative assistant Luke (not his real name), who is single, was told that there were photos of him with a woman claiming to be his fiancee and the baby they supposedly had together.In the months that followed, more manipulated images with the same woman popped up.There were also doctored images of him and his sister's children, with the woman pretending to have taken the photos of the toddlers.Luke realised he was being targeted by an online stalker.He said he was alerted to the photos by his sister. She told The Straits Times that it was one of her friends, who also knew Luke, who first became aware of the images.The friend knew Luke is not in a relationship or married, and had no children. Luke's sister said she tried to get in touch with the woman.She told the woman to remove the images, especially since her then 6-month-old son's photo was used in the fake images. She did not receive a response.

SINGAPORE – HarbourFront Centre will cease operations on July 27, the shopping mall announced in a Facebook post on June 19.The Singapore Cruise Centre will be relocated to 5 HarbourFront Avenue with effect from July 15, it added.The new location is just 70m from the existing terminal located within HarbourFront Centre.Batam Fast Ferry will be the first operator to start operations from the new terminal on July 7, with all other ferry operators and cruise operations to follow suit from July 15.No changes will be made to ferry routes, destinations served and scheduling as a result of the move, the Singapore Cruise Centre said in a statement on June 15.[[nid:724557]]The international terminal has been operating from HarbourFront Centre since 1992.Ferry services to Indonesian destinations including Batam Centre, Harbour Bay, Sekupang, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Gold Coast and Nirup Island, as well as international cruise operations, will continue as usual, it said.

Three Malaysian men, aged between 22 and 24, will be charged in court on Saturday (June 20) for their alleged involvement in scams.Police said in a news release on Friday that the trio had allegedly entered Singapore on an assignment by scam syndicates to collect cash and gold bars from victims in Singapore.Acting on information received on a 23-year-old Malaysian man, officers from the Anti-Scam Command as well as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority went on to identify two male accomplices who had entered Singapore with him. All three men were arrested within six hours of entering Singapore.Preliminary investigations revealed that the trio had received instructions from a scam syndicate based in Malaysia to perform ATM withdrawals across different locations in Singapore.During the operation, officers found and seized 69 bank cards which were used to withdraw monies amounting to around $200,000 in scam losses across more than 20 cases.If found guilty of assisting others to retain criminal proceeds, the 23-year-old man could be jailed for up to 10 years, fined up to $500,000, or both.

SINGAPORE - Electrical appliances chain Gain City was hit by a flurry of one-star reviews on Google over the last two weeks, with offers to help coming soon after from people believed to be conmen.The messages, sent to Gain City employees, arrived on the heels of the spike in negative reviews and offered to remove the one-star reviews.Responding to queries, Gain City spokeswoman Candy Cao said the first suspicious inquiry was reported by a showroom manager in early April, after which the retailer started to monitor the situation.Gain City has attracted negative reviews in the past, but they were isolated incidents, she added. In the last two weeks, however, the retailer noticed an increase in suspicious one-star reviews, she said.Screenshots provided by Gain City show numerous one-star reviews, with no additional comments.Cao said: «Legitimate reviews typically contain details relating to actual customer experiences, products, services or interactions with our staff.»

SINGAPORE – The recent decision to screen the Mandarin-dubbed version of Chinese movie Dear You (2026) for general release here has become a hot topic of discussion among Singaporeans, with several film-makers weighing in on the issue.On June 19, The Straits Times published a letter from film-makers Eric Khoo, 61, and Jack Neo, 66. They hoped the authorities would set out a new direction “beneficial to the stakeholders” in Singapore’s film industry.The indie work’s original Teochew version premiered on June 17 at Sands Theatre and will be made available for subsequent festival and niche screenings.The Infocomm Media Development Authority has said these moves are in line with the current approach to support the bilingual policy, which aims to promote Mandarin as the main language among Chinese Singaporeans. Full dialect films can be screened at festival or niche events to provide access to such content for those who wish to view the film in its original language.

Two men, aged 30 and 42, were arrested on Friday (June 19) for allegedly stealing a diamond worth more than $235,000 from a jewellery store in Chinatown.In a news release on Saturday, the olice said they received a report at about 3.40pm from a jewellery store along Kreta Ayer Road.Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo pretended to show interest in purchasing the diamond. While «examining» the diamond, they replaced it with a fake one.They then left the shop without making any purchases, arousing the shop assistant's suspicion. He later discovered that the genuine diamond had been replaced with a fake after conducting a check.

Autonomous shuttle service operator ComfortDelGro (CDG) will offer free rides on its driverless shuttles in Punggol from Monday (June 22).The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and CDG announced on June 19 that the rides will run daily, with Mondays and Fridays set aside for groups, families and those needing assistance.Members of the public and residents in Punggol who are keen to experience the autonomous shuttle service can book their free ride on CDG's Zig mobile app. They may also do so via CDG's website. Bookings are required for those who wish to take the rides.Pickup locations are at Northshore Block 420A, Punggol Coast Mall, and One Punggol.

A fire broke out at Whampoa Makan Place at a noodle stall on Friday (June 19) at about 4.10pm. Videos of the fire posted on social media show a kitchen exhaust duct on top of the said stall in flames. Some passers-by were seen trying to douse the fire using a hosereel. At least two passers-by stepped forward to help. They are seen using a hose reel to douse the flames. Petrol prices in Singapore fell for the first time in nearly a month, as Shell became the first among major fuel companies here to post reductions across its petrol offerings on Friday (June 20).In a price board update published at 4.30pm, the Britain-based company announced that it had posted a 4-cent reduction across its 95-octane, 95-octane petrol, and its more premium V-Power.Diesel price remains unchanged — it was reduced by 10 cents to $4.22 on June 16.The more popular 95-octane petrol crossed the $3.40-mark on March 17, and its price has remained above since.Following the latest round of petrol prices reduction at Shell, its 95-octane petrol is now priced at $3.42 per litre, while its 98-octane and V-Power are priced at $3.94 and $4.16, respectively.Caltex mirrored Shell's 4-cent reduction across its petrol offerings at 9pm the same day.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF)'s new Marine Division Headquarters was officially opened on Friday (June 19).Located on Pulau Brani, the heart of the new division will be the Integrated Command Centre (ICC) which will serve as the «nerve centre for managing maritime incidents».Designed in collaboration with Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), the new Marine Division Headquarters «harmonises operations, marine training and community engagement, all under one roof». «This new marine headquarters marks a significant milestone in our capability building,» said commander of the SCDF Marine Division, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ryan Ong.«There are also facilities to test and harness advanced unmanned systems for marine firefighting; this capability development will ensure that we are well-prepared to continue safeguarding Singapore waters.»

Singapore has received approval from the US to upgrade its M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) in a deal estimated to be worth US$73 million (S$94 million).The US Department of State said in a press statement that Singapore had requested to purchase 18 common fire control system upgrade kits for its HIMARS.The kits will include support equipment, technical documentation, spare parts, training and support services such as in logistics and programming.«This proposed sale will improve Singapore's capability to meet current and future threats by enhancing and extending its Army's ability to conduct operations and enable effective training. Singapore will have no difficulty absorbing this training into its armed forces,» the statement read.A fire control system can be likened to the «brain» of the artillery rocket system. It typically comprises an integrated set of sensors, computational hardware, and software algorithms used to calculate and apply the correct aiming and firing solution for the weapon system.

An Australian tourist has thanked SBS Transit and its staff for helping her recover a shopping bag before her flight.In a Facebook post on Thursday (June 18), the bus operator praised two of its employees, Assistant Interchange Supervisor Salim Bin Alias and Bus Captain Abdul Lathiff B Parek, for their proactiveness in helping a tourist recover her lost item.The tourist, known as Serena, wrote a letter to SBS Transit recounting the incident on April 4, where she had mistakenly left a shopping bag on Service 32 bus four hours before she was scheduled to fly home.She subsequently called SBS Transit for help, and was assisted by Salim, who retraced her journey and narrowed the search to a few buses and waited for them to return to Buona Vista Terminal after completing their trips. According to SBS, Lathiff found the lost shopping bag on his bus and promptly handed it over.Salim immediately called Serena to share the good news, and her husband, Paul, retrieved it from the terminal. «I always feel happy when passengers are reunited with their belongings,» said Salim. 

Singapore has been ranked the eighth most peaceful country, and the most peaceful in Asia, according to the Global Peace Index 2026 published on June 9.The report, which is being published every year since 2007, scored the Republic 1.435 on the index, which is made up of 23 quantitative and qualitative indicators each weighted on a scale of one to five. The lower the score, the more peaceful the country is.As such, Singapore upheld the spot as the most peaceful country in Asia, followed by Japan (10) and Malaysia (12).Topping the list for the 19th consecutive year is Iceland with a score of 1.161, followed by New Zealand with 1.343 and Switzerland with 1.363.In contrast, Russia was listed as the least peaceful with a score of 3.367, followed by Sudan with 3.195 and Democratic Republic of the Congo with 3.189.The Global Peace Index, which is calculated by Australian think tank Institute of Economics & Peace, examines the safety and stability across 163 countries and territories worldwide, covering 99.7 per cent of the world's population.

Plaud plans to invest more than $10 million in expanding its Singapore headquarters, with its local workforce expected to grow to around 150 employees by the end of 2026.The Singapore office will oversee Plaud’s Asia-Pacific strategy while supporting global and regional functions, including cloud infrastructure, AI development, human resources, finance, treasury and legal compliance. Plaud says the expansion would take its worldwide workforce beyond 600 employees.Singapore will also become Plaud’s first R&D hub in Asia-Pacific. The company is hiring AI engineers, AI agent architects, and data scientists to work on AI workflows and intelligent agent systems alongside its global product and engineering teams. It did not specify its current headcount in Singapore or how many of the planned 150 positions will be dedicated to research and engineering.“Singapore gives us access to strong AI, engineering and regional business talent,” said Plaud co-founder and CEO Nathan Xu. 

A batch of pickled pearl garlic has been recalled after sulphur dioxide — an allergen — was detected in it, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said on Friday (June 19).The level of sulphur dioxide in the product exceeded the maximum limit, the agency said. The allergen was not declared on the food packaging.Sinhua Hock Kee Trading Pte Ltd, the importer of the affected Pickled Pearl Garlic (230g) product, has been directed to recall one batch of the product from Thailand with an expiry date of May 5, 2029.Sulphite does not pose a food safety issue to consumers at large, but those who are intolerant of, or allergic to, sulphites can suffer from allergic reactions such as hives, itchiness, stomach ache, diarrhoea or vomiting.Consumers who have purchased the affected product, and are intolerant of or allergic to sulphites, should not consume them, the agency added. They may contact their point of purchase for enquiries.Those who have consumed the product should seek medical advice if they have concerns about their health.

Accompanying her daughter to an open casting call for a modelling agency, the mother was surprised to find herself called into the room to audition.Sun Ting, 50, ended up signing with Basic Models Management, a local modelling agency, after passing several rounds of evaluation.This was caught on camera as part of an episode of the agency's Making of a Model series, which was uploaded on their YouTube channel on June 10.Anya, 15, a Singapore Permanent Resident, was called in to audition by the judges, where she revealed that she was a French citizen, as her dad is French, while her mother is Chinese.When asked if she had any other friends who model, Anya mentioned that her mother was a former model.Modelling since young«I'm a little bit nervous and excited for my daughter,» Sun said, while speaking to the camera in the video as she stood outside the audition room waiting for Anya.«I've been modelling since I was young, so it's like she followed my passions,» she added.

Upset that he was denied a straw at a convenience store, a man returned with two knives and threatened to harm the shopkeeper.The scene occurred at a store located at 78 Redhill Lane on May 1, at about 1.57pm, according to Shin Min Daily News.The perpetrator, 55-year-old Wu Zhijian (transliterated), reportedly visited the shop to buy bread and a canned drink, and had asked for a straw from the store manager, 42-year-old Prebu Karuppiah.He accused the shopkeeper of refusing him a straw, and an argument ensued.Wu left the shop in a huff, but barged back in a few minutes later while holding two knives.The man reportedly shouted at Karuppiah and threatened to harm him as he brandished the knives. He then shoved the cash register before leaving the scene, reported Shin Min.Karuppiah immediately reported the case to the police, and said that Wu lives upstairs on the same block.CCTV footage from the shop reportedly showed a man in a red shirt walking while holding a knife in each hand.Wu was apprehended by the police that same afternoon, and was subsequently charged the following day.

Singapore welcomes the US-Iran agreement to cease all operations in the Middle East, and the commitment under the agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said.A spokesperson for the ministry said on Thursday (June 18) night that a resolution of the outstanding issues, keeping with international law, «will create the necessary conditions for lasting peace, security and stability in the region».To this end, the move to establish a framework for further negotiations on outstanding issues is welcomed, MFA added.It also commended the efforts of Pakistan and Qatar for their efforts to mediate between the parties. 

A total of 22 people were injured after a minibus, a lorry and a prime mover were involved in an accident in Tuas on Thursday (June 18).In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident along Tuas South Avenue 3 towards Tuas South Boulevard at about 6.50am. Twenty-two people, aged between 21 and 53, were taken conscious to the hospital, said the police. Six were taken to the National University Hospital while 16 others to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, said SCDF. The 41-year-old male minibus driver is assisting with ongoing police investigations.A TikTok video shared on Thursday showed a white minibus, with the driver's door slightly ajar and the window shattered, stopped behind a lorry. Debris was scattered between the two vehicles. The lorry is seen to have rammed into the back of an unloaded prime mover. At least one fire engine and three ambulances were at the scene. AsiaOne has contacted the Ministry of Manpower for more information. 

Singapore has reclaimed the top spot in the 2026 edition of IMD's World Competitiveness Rankings, overtaking Switzerland who placed first last year.Released on Thursday (June 18), the rankings assessed 70 economies based on four competitiveness factors — economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure.«Geopolitical conditions are worsening, and global fragmentation is increasing,» said Arturo Bris, Director of the World Competitiveness Center (WCC) in the report. «Nations with their own tried and tested, credible institutions gain an advantage in this context because — as the international systems cease to serve so many national needs — businesses can carry on as usual.»Singapore placed first in business efficiency, fourth in government efficiency and economic performance, and fifth in infrastructure, according to the report.WCC economist Fabian Grimm wrote in the report that Singapore's strong performance in the 2026 rankings show a «broad-based recovery and strengthening across multiple dimensions of competitiveness». 

A man got an unexpected apology for renovation noise when a neighbour allegedly left him a $10 FairPrice voucher and a handwritten note.In a Facebook post on Saturday (June 13), user Patrick Sato Lee shared a photo of the gift voucher and an envelope with writing on the back. The $10 FairPrice gift voucher came in an envelope with a short note apologising for the renovation noise and thanking the recipient for their understanding. It was signed off by Sean and Kelly.Lee didn't indicate where this estate is.
