A 27-year-old man will be charged in court on Friday (Aug 7) for allegedly posting videos containing insulting remarks about the Muslim community in Singapore.Police said in a news release following his arrest on Thursday that they had received a report on March 1 regarding other videos posted by the man.He had allegedly uploaded videos of himself on social media in which he made «insulting and profane remarks» against the Muslim community in Singapore.Officers from Tanglin Police Division later established the identity of the man, but he had already left Singapore for Malaysia prior to the report being lodged.«With the assistance of the Royal Malaysia Police, the man was deported from Malaysia on Aug 6, and was arrested by the Police upon his arrival in Singapore on the same day,» the police said.The 27-year-old will be charged with the offence of insulting the religion of another person under Section 17F(4) of the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act 1990.If convicted, he could face up to five years' jail, a fine, or both.

Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport has apologised for its security officers' «inappropriate conduct» while handling 22 disorderly fans who mobbed two actors there on July 29, including Singaporean actor Ayden Sng.The airport in Bangkok issued a statement in English on Tuesday (Aug 4) after footage of a security officer making a racially offensive gesture towards the fans went viral on social media.  The incident occurred on July 29 at around 11pm (12am SGT), wrote the airport in its statement outlining the events of the incident.A group of fans who were scheduled to board Thai Airways flight TG674 to Beijing that night had swarmed around two actors, wrote the statement.The artistes were later identified as Sng and Chinese national Lv Sitong, both stars of the popular web drama Double Helix. They were in Bangkok for a July 26 fan meet.The airport explained that the fans followed the artistes into the passenger lounge even though entry to the facility was prohibited for them.As such, Thai Airways staff contacted airport security personnel to manage the situation and escort the fans out of the lounge.

The police have recovered Miss Universe Singapore Annika Xue Sager's missing bag, a day after she shared on Instagram that she had spent 48 hours tracking it across Singapore using Apple's Find My app.In an Instagram video uploaded on Thursday (Aug 6), Sager said she received the news from her investigating officer at about 8pm on Wednesday.Shortly after receiving the call, two police officers arrived at her home to take her statement and to verify whether all the items in her bag had been recovered.She said that «almost» everything was recovered, with only some cash from her wallet reported missing.Sager said police did not disclose how they located the bag, apart from saying that CCTV footage had been used in their investigations.In her previous video, she said the bag had fallen off her motorcycle along Swiss Club Road, and she was later told by a security guard that a black car had picked it up.

A 51-year-old Singapore man has been arrested for attempting to smuggle 60 vaporisers into Singapore through Tuas Checkpoint, said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).In a post on Facebook post on Wednesday (Aug 6), ICA said its officers foiled the attempt on July 20 after profiling a Singapore-registered car for enhanced checks. During the inspection, officers discovered 60 vaporisers concealed in the floorboard compartment of the vehicle. The Singaporean driver was arrested, and the case has since been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigation, said ICA. The authority added that he was issued a composition fine. On May 4, the Ministry of Health and HSA said that in the first quarter of the year, authorities seized more than 36,000 vapes and related components across Singapore's checkpoints and detected 24 smuggling cases.

A man was fined $8,000 after he pleaded guilty to disposing about 1,530 kg of household and renovation waste illegally at a heavy vehicle park in Tampines.General worker Shkder Foridul was charged with one count of dumping waste from a vehicle in a public place under the Environmental Public Health Act 1987 on Tuesday (Aug 4), said the National Environment Agency (NEA) in a statement on Thursday.The pile of waste, which comprised of household items and renovation waste, had been dumped on the grass verge at Tampines Road Heavy Vehicle Park and was discovered during a routine check by NEA on May 14 last year.Investigations revealed that the man had undertaken hacking and dismantling jobs for two residential premises at Whampoa Drive and Farrer Road respectively.Instead of disposing them at a licensed general waste disposal facility, he had dumped it illegally out of convenience.«The illegal disposal of waste is a serious offence as it pollutes the environment and poses a hazard to public health,» the agency said.«NEA will not hesitate to take strict enforcement action against any person who disposes of waste illegally.»

SINGAPORE — The driver who caused a six-vehicle collision in Tampines in 2024, which claimed the lives of a junior college student and a 57-year-old woman, has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.The court on Aug 6 heard that the student’s mother has been struggling with major depressive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder over the loss of her daughter.Muhammad Syafie Ismail, 45, admitted to a slew of traffic offences, including dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing hurt.Syafie arrived at around 8.40am and walked into the State Courts alone, donning sunglasses, a cap and a mask, with his head down.His admission to the offences comes more than two years after the crash on April 22, 2024, and after at least four court adjournments.After working the night shift as an operations manager at a global manufacturing firm and later dropping off a GrabHitch passenger in Bedok at around 6.15am, Syafie drove dangerously by abruptly overtaking a car along Bedok Reservoir Road.

Four healthcare operators have been appointed to deliver the enhanced Primary Care Plan (PCP) for migrant workers, providing this group with more affordable healthcare from April 2027, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Wednesday (Aug 5).Under this enhanced PCP, migrant workers will co-pay $5 per consultation for physical clinic consultation and telemedicine services. «[This will allow] migrant workers to seek care when they need to. This takes into account the higher costs of delivering telemedicine services while ensuring that consultation co-payments remain affordable for migrant workers,» said the ministry. The four operators are Sata CommHealth, St Andrew's Mission Hospital, Healthway Medical Group and Fullerton Health.Anchored in the north, south, east and west of Singapore, these operators will provide this service for the next five years from April 1, 2027.The PCP was introduced in 2022.MOM said that they have consulted with stakeholders and enhanced the PCP, aiming to make primary healthcare more accessible and strengthen service delivery while keeping costs affordable for employers.

Singapore's western rail network is set to expand further, with four new stations planned under Phase 3 of the Cross Island Line.Announced on July 31, the Cross Island Line Phase 3, or CRL3, will extend the line by about 10km from the future Jurong Lake District station to Gul Circle. It will serve residents in Taman Jurong while providing workers with better access to the industrial areas around Jalan Buroh, Benoi and Gul.Construction is expected to begin in 2027, while the stations are targeted to open by the late 2030s. Although the full benefits remain more than a decade away, the confirmed route provides a clearer picture of how homes and workplaces in the west will eventually be connected.

SINGAPORE — While his pregnant wife was out running errands, a man raped a deaf and mute 13-year-old girl.The man, now 24, was sentenced to a jail term of 12 years and nine months, as well as 12 strokes of the cane, on Aug 5.He pleaded guilty to rape and a charge of being absent without leave from his national service duties with the Singapore Civil Defence Force for over a year.Another two molest charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.He cannot be named due to a gag order on the identities of both the man and victim.The incident happened in November 2024, when the man was living in a two-room rental flat with his wife. She was then about five months into her pregnancy.The court heard that the man and his wife knew the victim and her family. His wife was the goddaughter of the victim's mother, while he was a secondary schoolmate of the victim's older brother.The victim, who called him «uncle», initially found him «nice, kind and funny». They would communicate through very basic sign language and gestures, and by messages on their phones.

SINGAPORE — A woman who posted negative reviews on the Google page of a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) clinic must pay $12,500 in damages for defaming the physician who treated her.The customer, Cheryl Lim, had experienced weakness in her arm after she underwent acupuncture treatment at the Kin Teck Tong TCM Clinic at Plaza Singapura.In the first review she posted, she cautioned readers to “think twice” and questioned if the physician, Pheabe Chau, was qualified.After the clinic declined her request for a refund, Lim updated her review, this time stating that going to the clinic for treatment caused her to lose her arm strength.In a written judgment on Aug 4, District Judge Sim Mei Ling said both reviews were defamatory.The judge rejected Lim’s argument that they were justified, saying she had not sought to prove the truth of her statements.However, the judge concluded the first review expressed an honest opinion and amounted to fair comment, which is a defence to a defamation claim.But the second review was a definitive statement of fact.

SINGAPORE — DBS Group, Singapore's biggest bank, raised its full-year guidance after second-quarter net profit rose nine per cent, beating expectations as strong wealth-management fees, treasury sales and trading income offset pressure from lower interest rates.DBS, which is also Southeast Asia's biggest lender by assets, posted a record quarterly net profit of $3.08 billion, up from S$2.82 billion a year earlier.This beat the mean estimate of $2.88 billion from three analysts, according to LSEG data.Net interest margin, a key gauge of profitability, fell to 1.87 per cent from 2.05 per cent in the same period a year earlier, but that was offset by strong loan and deposit growth.«We delivered a strong set of results for the first half, anchored by the strength of our wealth management franchise,» CEO Tan Su Shan said in a statement, noting assets under management in the wealth division surpassed S$500 billion for the first time.She raised DBS' 2026 outlook, saying total income was expected to exceed 2025 levels, while group net interest income was expected to close the gap to 2025 levels. 

Footage of a facial recognition gantry at Punggol Coast MRT station has left some netizens intrigued about its purpose and effectiveness, according to multiple posts circulating on social media.A clip uploaded by user N9obs_win on YouTube shows that this facial recognition system appears to be incorporated into the priority use gantry.A screen mounted beside the gantry reflects a commuter's face as they attempt to pass through, similar to the way the automated clearance gantries used by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) work.In a separate TikTok video posted by 8days, a commuter attempted to use the facial recognition gantry to enter the station.However, the system did not work for the commuter, who then entered through a conventional gantry instead.Speaking to 8days, a staff member at Punggol Coast MRT station station said the system was being trialled and that registration was required before it could be used.Under the trial, a user's transport card is linked to the facial recognition system, allowing them to enter and exit through the gantry.

Workers' Party MPs on Wednesday (Aug 5) put forward a range of proposals in Parliament aimed at addressing challenges facing Singaporean workers, young people and local businesses.A motion titled «an economy of the future that works for all» was moved by Aljunied GRC MP Kenneth Tiong, who said in his opening speech that Singapore needs an updated growth model.Speaking on the challenge of innovation and entrepreneurship, he submitted the creation of a «special» zone consisting of residential and commercial space, including local enterprise and R&D, around Nanyang Technological University (NTU).Tiong said the State land in this district should not be priced at market scarcity value. Instead, it «takes its return in the companies that grow there instead of in rent».Tiong argued that high land costs have become a barrier to research, entrepreneurship and innovation, particularly for younger Singaporeans.He described the proposal as an «experiment» that could create a district that is both «pro-worker and pro-business».

A motion on Singapore's economic future filed by the Workers' Party (WP) MP Kenneth Tiong was amended and subsequently passed by the People's Action Party (PAP) majority on Wednesday (Aug 5) following more than eight hours of debate.The original motion stated that the House, notwithstanding the suggestions in the Economic Strategy Review on the future Singapore economy, believes in a more equal and inclusive economy.The WP's motion also said the House believes in an economic engine driven by dynamic local companies, healthy domestic demand, and Singaporeans and Singaporean capital venturing abroad.Holland-Bukit Timah MP Edward Chia, who spoke fourth in the debate, proposed to amend the motion by replacing the word «notwithstanding» to «in line with».He also proposed changing the phrase «economic engine driven» to «economic powered», inserting «global enterprises» after «local companies», and adding the words «and external» after the phrase «healthy domestic».Tiong said the WP cannot accept the first amendment of changing «notwithstanding» to «in line with», which «turns the sentence around».

Eleven drivers have been caught for allegedly providing illegal cross-border ride-hailing services, and their vehicles impounded, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Facebook post on Tuesday (Aug 5).The authority said the operation was carried out following tip-offs from the National Private Hire Vehicles Association and the National Taxi Association.LTA also reminded commuters travelling to Johor Bahru over the long National Day weekend to use only licensed cross-border ride-hailing services or Singapore-registered cross-border taxis.«For your safety, only book a licensed cross-border ride-hailing service on Grab or have a Singapore-registered cross-border taxi pick you up anywhere in Singapore for drop-off in Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Forest City, Kulai or Senai,» said LTA.The latest enforcement comes after Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling said in a Facebook post on July 21 that more than 5,000 vehicles had been checked since July 2025.

Singapore's United Overseas Bank (UOB) is selling its asset management business to a unit of Germany's Allianz for $555 million, as the lender focuses on wealth advice and distribution.The deal marks insurer Allianz's second Singapore-related acquisition announced in about two weeks, following its July 24 deal to buy HSBC's life and health insurance business in the city-state for $2.7 billion.Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI), the asset management arm of Allianz, will buy all of UOB's shares in UOB Asset Management, which operates in Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, according to statements from the two companies on Wednesday.The deal includes excess cash held by UOB Asset Management and a 10-year distribution agreement, AllianzGI said.UOB Asset Management managed about $42 billion of client assets as of Dec 31, 2025, UOB said. The purchase will raise AllianzGI's assets managed for clients in Asia-Pacific to more than €170 billion (S$217.9 billion), it said.

Around 5.5 million bottles and cans have been recycled through the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) since the launch in April, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Janil Puthucheary said in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 5).«We expect this number to grow as more BCRS-labelled products enter the market,» Dr Janil estimated, adding that over a million successful refunds have been made.These refunds are 10 cents each for every eligible drink container returned to Return Right machines found across Singapore as part of the BCRS.Under the scheme, drinks with the BCRS mark have also increased by 10 cents.Dr Janil was responding to a parliamentary question from Sembawang GRC MP Mariam Jaafar, who requested clarification on the scheme since its launch.She also questioned how any surplus from the 10-cent increase is accounted for and what happens to the surplus obtained under the scheme.«Most transactions and returns at reverse vending machines have been successful,» Dr Janil said.

A dispute over a car rental agreement spiralled into a police car chase from Sembawang to Woodlands on Tuesday (Aug 4) morning, resulting in the arrest of four persons — two men and two women — aged between 30 and 38.Police said in a news release on Wednesday morning that they received a report of a man being threatened by a group of persons with a parang.According to the police, the incident took place at about 1.55am at a carpark along Canberra Street.Their preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was confronted by the quartet due to a dispute over a car rental agreement.During the dispute, a 38-year-old man from the group allegedly brandished a parang and threatened the victim, who was then made to sit in the front passenger seat of his vehicle, with another 36-year-old man seated at the back.Car collided into lamp postThey then drove off to another location where officers from Woodlands Police Division spotted them.Upon sighting the police, the 38-year-old man purportedly fled in the vehicle with the victim and the 36-year-old man as passengers. The police then gave chase.

A property agent's visit to a HDB flat uncovered an alleged tenancy dispute after several occupants were found living in the unit despite allegedly owing rent and not being listed on the tenancy agreement.In a TikTok video shared on Friday (July 31), the property agent was heard informing the occupants that they could not continue living in the flat until the tenancy arrangement was settled.«You all cannot stay here. Call your boss first, then we will see what the police says,» said the agent, adding that there were more than six occupants in the flat, exceeding the allowed occupancy limit.AsiaOne understands that the unit is a three-room HDB flat in Tampines.According to the HDB website, the maximum number of tenants allowed in a three-room flat is six.When confronted, the occupants could be heard in the video saying that their employer had allegedly stopped paying their salaries, was no longer responding to them, and was overseas. 

A total of 5,176 persons were arrested for drink driving between 2023 to 2025, while 6,950 cases were sentenced during the same period, said Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam on Tuesday (Aug 4).Shanmugam, who is also Minister for Home Affairs, was responding to a parliamentary question from Workers' Party MP Assoc Prof Jamus Lim (Sengkang GRC), who had asked for the duration of driving bans, fines imposed and jail terms handed down to offenders sentenced to imprisonment. In his written reply, the senior minister pointed out that arrest and sentencing statistics in a particular year are not directly comparable as persons arrested in a year may only be charged and/or sentenced in a later year.This is due to the time required for investigations and court proceedings, Shanmugam explained.Providing a breakdown for the 6,950 cases sentenced in the said period, he said that about 47 per cent, or 3,283 cases, received driving bans averaging 38 months in duration. Of these, 40 cases received lifetime driving bans. 

Police investigations are ongoing after a man was caught allegedly damaging a car's windshield wiper at a mall in Simei.Footage of the incident was uploaded to Facebook by SGRV Admin and reportedly took place on Monday (Aug 3) at about 6.15pm on the third floor of the carpark at Eastpoint Mall.In the video, a man can be seen approaching the car before forcefully grabbing onto the windshield wiper and attempting to break it in half.The man first pushes the wiper downwards before pulling it in the opposite direction and pushing it backwards.The video ends with the man walking away after apparently damaging the windshield wiper.A photo of the deformed windshield wiper was also included in the video, where it can be seen visibly bent out of shape.In the caption, the owner of the car wrote that the windscreen wiper was deliberately bent, and that it caused damage «not only to the wiper but also to front bonnet and vinyl wrap».«This was an unnecessary act of vandalism that has caused avoidable damage and inconvenience,» the owner added, urging the culprit to take responsibility for his actions.

If you've been unsuccessful in balloting for National Day Parade (NDP) tickets, don't give up. That's because since 2025, the NDP Executive Committee (EXCO) has had a system in place to boost the chances of applicants who were unsuccessful in previous ballots.Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing revealed this in his written response to a parliamentary question from MP Valerie Lee (Pasir Ris-Changi GRC) on Tuesday (Aug 4).Lee had asked if the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) would review the NDP balloting system to improve public accessibility, including whether unsuccessful applicants over consecutive years could be given a higher chance of securing tickets.She also asked whether Mindef would look into reducing collection times for NDP tickets.Earlier in June, there were claims of three-hour-long queues faced by those collecting NDP tickets at Marina Square.

Changi Airport will begin the first phase of deploying autonomous wheelchairs following successful trials involving more than 13,000 passengers at Terminals 2 and 3.Announcing the rollout in a joint media release on Tuesday (Aug 4), Changi Airport Group (CAG) and ground handling partner SATS said the initiative is aimed at enhancing the travel experience for passengers with reduced mobility (PRMs).It is intended to enable PRMs to navigate the terminals more independently, reducing reliance on one-to-one staff assistance, especially during periods of high demand. This will allow ground staff to focus on passengers who require higher levels of care and assistance, CAG and SATS said.The airport expects demand for special assistance services to increase as Singapore's population ages and as air travel continues to grow.Changi Airport recorded a 20 per cent increase in requests for wheelchair assistance between 2023 and 2025, reflecting the growing need for mobility support among travellers.

A Malaysian man was arrested at Woodlands Checkpoint after attempting to smuggle more than 10kg of drugs, including cannabis and 'Ice', into Singapore.In a press release on Tuesday (Aug 4), the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said that the 22-year-old man was nabbed on Saturday morning (Aug 1).He had arrived at the checkpoint in a Malaysia-registered car and was directed for enhanced checks by ICA officers.During the checks, officers uncovered a box in the car boot containing two blocks of substances believed to be controlled drugs.Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were subsequently alerted and conducted additional checks that led to the discovery of more drugs in the car boot.In total, around 8.6kg of cannabis and 1.6kg of methamphetamine, known as 'Ice', were seized.According to ICA, the drugs are estimated to be worth over $361,000, and could potentially feed the addiction of about 2,132 abusers for a week.CNB investigations are ongoing. 

A woman has made a police report after alleging that the previous owner of her HDB flat had fraudulently claimed her household's CDC vouchers, prompting a police investigation. Huang (transliterated), a 54-year-old accountant, told Lianhe Zaobao that when she tried to claim her June Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers, she discovered that they had already been redeemed. The 54-year-old then went to a nearby community centre to inquire about the matter and was told by staff members that the vouchers had been claimed by someone bearing the same name as the unit's former male owner. Huang immediately lodged a complaint with the community centre and filed a police report, reported Lianhe Zaobao. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong previously announced that all Singaporeans will be able to claim $500 worth of Community Development Council (CDC) vouchers from June 11. The vouchers will be valid until Dec 31, 2027.
