A 36-year-old man will be charged in court on Friday (June 19) for alleged possession of a scheduled weapon, unauthorised possession of weapons and multiple traffic offences.He was the driver of a red saloon car which was involved in an accident with a yellow ComfortDelGro taxi along Kallang Bahru towards Lavender Street on Wednesday.He allegedly abandoned his car and fled the scene prior to police officers' arrival.Suspected drugs, drug-related paraphernalia, e-vaporisers and a knuckleduster were later found in the car and seized as case exhibits.He faces seven charges, including the possession of a scheduled weapon; unauthorised possession of weapons; driving while under the influence of a drug; dangerous driving causing hurt; driving without a valid driving licence, leaving vehicle causing obstruction; and using a motor vehicle without insurance. 

The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (June 18) issued a notice to revoke Windsor Convalescent Home's licence to provide nursing home services over what it described as «serious and systemic lapses».The 45-bed facility, located at 369 Pasir Panjang Road, will have its licence revoked on Oct 30.This means that it will no longer be able to provide nursing home services at the said premises from the given date, the ministry stated.Explaining why the home's licence was not revoked immediately, the ministry said this considers the time required to transfer current residents at the facility to other nursing homes.Meanwhile, the ministry has deployed an interim care team from Vanguard Healthcare to Windsor Convalescent Home to ensure that residents will continue to receive proper care throughout the process.What happenedSharing its findings from an audit, MOH said the «serious and systemic lapses» are in the areas of resident safety, clinical and nursing care, and infection control practices.For example, the audit found that residents' fundamental care needs, such as basic grooming were neglected. 

A new variant of malware-enabled scams is actively targeting senior citizens on android devices, the police said in an advisory on Thursday (June 18).Since April 1, 2026, at least eight cases have been reported, with victims losing a total of about $69,000.Scam operations begin on platforms like Facebook and TikTok, where scammers plant alluring advertisements promoting various activities tailored specifically for senior citizens. Interested seniors who submit their personal contact details on these ads are quickly contacted by fraudsters via WhatsApp. Scammers then instruct the victims to download an android package kit file under the pretense of viewing a comprehensive list of activities.Once the file is installed, some victims notice that their critical security applications, such as Singpass or ScamShield, are uninstalled from their phones.In one instance, a victim discovered that his online banking transaction limit had been increased without authorisation.

A resident has raised concerns over hygiene after discovering discoloured tap water in her home in Bedok. Speaking to AsiaOne, the resident, who wished to be known only as Nic, 31, said her family first experienced the issue a few months ago but did not think much of it as it occurred only once and resolved shortly after.She noted that although the issue appeared to have been resolved, it continued to recur several times over the past week.«In the morning when I urgently needed to get ready to go out, I used that water to brush my teeth without realising it,» said Nic, adding that the water left stains on the toilet bowl.Sharing her experience in a video on TikTok on Tuesday (June 16), Nic showed brownish-coloured water running from a tap and water in the toilet bowl after flushing.

The Circle Line will finally become a complete loop on July 12, with the opening of a 4km tunnel connecting Marina Bay and HarbourFront MRT stations.In a media sharing session on Wednesday (June 17), the Land Transport Authority (LTA) highlighted the care it has taken to minimise disruption to the Singapore landscape and commuters during the construction and system integration of phase 6 of the Circle Line (CCL6).This phase sees three new stations (Keppel, Cantonment and Prince Edward Road) and an extended Kim Chuan Depot added to the existing network.Between the new Keppel and Cantonment MRT stations, engineers faced the challenge of tunneling between two Keppel Viaduct piers to complete the Circle Line track. In a bid to ensure minimal disruption, engineers had to cut through a total of seven piles belonging to two piers — which are vertical support structures — holding the viaduct up while still allowing traffic to continue overhead.

A 47-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman were arrested for their alleged involvement in unlicensed moneylending activities. Police said on Wednesday (June 18) that they were alerted to a dispute involving two persons and a debtor at Seah Im Food Centre on June 8.Officers responding to the incident and established that the dispute arose over the repayment of a loan.The two had allegedly conducted an unlicensed moneylending business by providing loans amounting to approximately $19,3000 to at least 13 borrowers in Singapore between February 2024 and May 2025.According to the police, the individual loan amounts ranged from $500 to $3,000.They also believe that the woman had assisted the man conducting such activity by soliciting borrowers.The man faces 18 counts of conducting a moneylending business without a licence, while the woman faces eight counts of assisting in an unlicensed moneylending business. They will be charged in court on Friday.The offence of conducting moneylending business without a licence carries a penalty of up to $300,000, and up to six strokes of the cane. 

Two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation and chest discomfort after a fire broke out in a HDB flat in Yishun on Thursday (June 18).The incident occurred at 844 Yishun Street 81, and videos seen by AsiaOne show thick black smoke billowing from the window while bright orange flames engulfed the unit.Responding to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they were alerted to the fire at around 11.50am and that it involved a bedroom in a fifth floor unit.SCDF firefighters conducted forcible entry into the unit and extinguished the fire with two water jets. The living room of the unit sustained burn damage as a result of the fire, said SCDF. An air-conditioning compressor on the sixth floor also caught fire, and was subsequently extinguished with a water jet. 28 evacuatedThe police and SCDF evacuated 28 residents as a precautionary measure, and two people were assessed by SCDF paramedics and taken to the hospital.One of them was taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation, while the other to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for chest discomfort.

Singapore universities have performed well overall in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2027, released on Thursday (June 18).The QS rankings, now in its 23nd edition, features over 1,500 universities across 106 countries and territories, assessing institutions based on several indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, and employment outcomes.A total of 8,808 institutions globally were assessed. Four universities — the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and the Singapore Management University (SMU) — were featured in the latest rankings. Amongst them, SUTD was the most improved university here, climbing 253 places to 266th. Meanwhile, SMU climbed 100 places to 411th. Two other autonomous universities — the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) — were not featured in the rankings.

Choosing artificial intelligence (AI) technology based on what it can do rather than where it comes from is critical for nations navigating AI sovereignty, Singapore's Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo said at the Asia Economic Summit on Wednesday (June 17). 

Gwenda Fong, previously deputy secretary for digital society and development at the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI), will be appointed chief executive of the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) and Commissioner of Cybersecurity effective July 1, MDDI announced on Wednesday (June 17).Fong, 48, has been the chief executive-designate at CSA since April 1.She takes over the helm from 61-year-old David Koh, who was appointed to the role on April 1, 2015, and concurrently as Commissioner of Cybersecurity since 2018.The incoming chief executive has over 20 years of public sector experience in technology, security and social policy roles. She oversaw Singapore's development of an inclusive and safe digital society in her previous appointment at the ministry.She also led the review and development of the digital society strategy, which the ministry said is a foundational piece of work in support of Smart Nation 2.0.

While the amount of waste generated by each person in Singapore has reduced over the past decade, and nearly 4 in 5 households now recycle, recycling rates have decreased substantially.Singapore's domestic recycling rate was just 11 per cent last year, while the non-domestic recycling rate was 67 per cent.Meanwhile, the overall recycling rate was just 52 per cent last year, lower than the 59 per cent registered in 2019 when the Zero Waste Masterplan was launched — targeting a 70 per cent overall recycling rate by 2030.The overall recycling rate in 2015 was 61 per cent. It rose to 62 per cent in 2018, before falling to 59 per cent in 2019, and 52 per cent in 2020.The overall recycling rate then rose to 55 per cent in 2021, and 57 per cent in 2022, before falling back to 52 per cent in 2023, and just 50 per cent in 2024.In a media release on Wednesday (June 17), the National Environment Agency (NEA) said it will review the Zero Waste Masterplan and its «strategies to encourage reduce, reuse and recycle, so as to extend the lifespan of Semakau Landfill» — Singapore's only remaining landfill.

A man has been living and eating on a staircase landing in a Pasir Ris HDB block, with residents saying that bags of rotting food and trash have accumulated in the area.Resident Nathaniel, who declined to give his real name, told AsiaOne earlier this month that he first noticed the situation in 2020.According to Nathaniel, the man — believed to be in his 50s — has been spending significant time outside his unit and using the common staircase area as part of his living space.The block is located at Pasir Ris Street 71.Nathaniel said the man «used to keep his green plastic bags of rotting food in the HDB risers, causing a clash with my other neighbour (who stays) at the corner unit».«I've encountered him scolding the cleaners and he demands they pay him back money for throwing his food away, and he claims the items are worth $10,000 or more, even though it's just rotten or partially eaten food,» he added.Tending to his plantsNathaniel told AsiaOne that officers from Pasir Ris–Changi Town Council went down one day in early June to remove the items, but the man was not around.

Fuel prices in Singapore fell for two consecutive days as most major fuel companies here — Caltex, Esso, Shell and SPC — posted reductions between Tuesday (June 16) and Wednesday.Shell kicked off the new round of pump price adjustments on Tuesday, announcing in a price board update at 4.30pm that it had reduced its diesel price by 10 cents to $4.22.The move was mirrored by Caltex and, later, Esso posting a similar 10-cent reduction to their respective diesel prices.SPC's reduction of its diesel price by 15 cents is the most aggressive among fuel companies which posted adjustments. All four companies however held their petrol prices steady.Following the latest round of changes, the price of diesel now ranges from $2.71 at Smart Energy to $4.17 at SPC, with Caltex, Esso and Shell all posting their respective diesel prices at $4.22 per litre.

A woman has raised privacy concerns after alleging that a man was livestreaming on an MRT train with his phone camera pointed in her direction.Speaking to AsiaOne, the 24-year-old account executive, who wished to be known only as Xu, said the incident occurred on Monday (June 15) at around 8.27pm.«I had just entered Singapore from Johor Bahru and boarded the MRT train at Tuas Link station, and only started noticing the man when the train was approaching Gul Circle station,» she said. While Xu could not be certain she was the intended subject of the livestream, she said the experience left her feeling uncomfortable.«I can't fully say he's filming me, but the feeling of being in the view of a stranger's camera was really uncomfortable.» Sharing her experience in an Instagram post on Tuesday, Xu said she had recorded the incident, which showed a man wearing a headset holding up his phone.

Motoring communities on social media and chat groups have been abuzz since Tuesday (June 16) evening after motorists spotted a mobile speed camera deployed along a stretch of the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) towards Woodlands Checkpoint.Checks by AsiaOne indicate that the camera's location is at the chevron markings where traffic from Turf Club Avenue merges into BKE. One person was taken to hospital after an accident along Kallang Bahru, in front of Bendemeer MRT Station Exit B, involving a ComfortDelGro taxi and a red car on Wednesday (June 17).Footage of the incident posted on social media shows the aftermath of the crash, with three Fast Response Cars seen stopped on the opposite side of the road at the time.The clip, believed to have been taken by a passer-by, captures the taxi and the red car with severe front-end damage. The two vehicles are believed to have collided before the red car crashed into the green fences along the road divider.Parts of the green fences were strewn across the road, with debris from the vehicles' bumpers scattered around the area. The taxi's doors were also left open.When AsiaOne visited the scene at about 11.50am, a tow truck was present, while a Traffic Police (TP) officer could be seen sweeping debris off the road. Engine oil could also be seen leaking from the red car.Several police officers were seen at the back of the red car, seemingly inspecting the vehicle.

A 13-year-old girl was apprehended after being rescued from the aircon ledge at an HDB unit in Punggol.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for assistance on Tuesday (June 16) at around 6.50pm from Block 312B Sumang Link.Eyewitnesses said that the girl had been sitting on the aircon ledge when SCDF personnel arrived, reported Lianhe Zaobao.The rescue lasted around five minutes.The teen was apprehended under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act, said the policeShe was subsequently taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital by SCDF.

Two days after his family reported him missing, a private-hire driver was found dead in his car along Bedok Reservoir Road on Monday (June 15), Shin Min Daily News reported on Tuesday.The 60-year-old man, reportedly a Gojek driver, was found in a white saloon car parked behind Block 632 Bedok Reservoir Road.Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the police said they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at around 12.40pm on Monday.The man was found motionless and pronounced dead on the spot.Officers had covered the car in white sheets by the time a Shin Min reporter arrived.The deceased's family arrived soon after and the wife broke down in tears while family members comforted her, according to the Chinese daily.Speaking with media, the niece shared that the deceased was last seen at about 11pm on Thursday when he left for work.«Normally, my uncle would return home to rest at around 9am,» the 21-year-old reportedly said. «However, he did not come home on Friday or Saturday.»Sensing something amiss, the family on Sunday contacted the police and the man's car rental company.

The benefit of youth may be to take blows and get right back on your feet — but a car accident?A young cyclist was sent flying after being struck by a car in Punggol but he was able to stand up and appeared to apologise to the driver, according to a video uploaded to Facebook group SG Road Vigilante on Tuesday (June 16).In the footage of the incident, which took place just before midnight on Tuesday, a teenager dressed in a black T-shirt and black shorts can be seen riding his bicycle across a pedestrian crossing just after the lights turn green in favour of traffic.A black saloon car on the leftmost lane accelerates and collides with the boy, who is sent flying onto the grass kerb.His bicycle rolls off screen, while an object, believed to be the car's license plate, shoots up into the air before landing on the right lane.Despite the apparent severity of the accident, the boy immediately gets to his feet after orientating himself and jogs towards the car.The driver steps out and the boy speaks with the latter, appearing to apologise for his mistake by raising both his hands and also bowing to the driver.

Singapore's non-oil domestic exports (NODX) rose by 38.4 per cent in May compared to a year earlier, extending the 24.4 per cent growth recorded in April, Enterprise Singapore (EnterpriseSG) announced on Wednesday (June 17).The growth was led by electronic NODX, which grew by 94.8 per cent, up from the 66.7 per cent increase in April.According to EnterpriseSG, the increase was supported by "robust artificial intelligence-related demand“ such as integrated circuits — which rose by 80.9 per cent or $1.6 billion, and disk media products — which grew by 227.8 per cent, or $1.1 billion.Meanwhile, pharmaceuticals recorded an increase of 102.6 per cent, or $1 billion.Non-electronic exports also grew, rising 17.7 per cent in May, up from the 10.9 per cent increase recorded last month.Of the top 10 markets for NODX goods, Taiwan was Singapore's top market, followed by the US and China. Non-oil re-exports (NORX) also extended its 29.6 per cent expansion in April, rising by 33.6 per cent. The rise was primarily driven by electronics NORX which rose by 47.5 per cent compared to a year earlier, Enterprise SG said.

A social media content creator has been criticised online after he posted a video of him reacting to a drink he spilled on a train.In a TikTok post on Sunday (June 14), the content creator, who goes by the account name Wilfredlee, shared footage showing the aftermath of the spill.The video also showed him filming his surroundings while making a distressed facial expression, as a greenish liquid could be seen across the carriage floor with tissues placed over part of the spill. 

A 61-year-old man who was inside a private ambulance along the Selatar Expressway (SLE) jumped out and was hit by another vehicle on Monday (June 15) afternoon.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence said they received a call for assistance at about 2.40pm along the SLE towards the Central Expressway after the Lentor Avenue exit.The man was arrested for committing a rash act and taken conscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.According to Lianhe Zaobao, the man allegedly jumped out while the ambulance was moving and ran on the road before being struck by a car. The Straits Times reported, however, that the ambulance had stopped on the road shoulder when the man jumped out and he was hit by a bus.Police investigations are ongoing.[[nid:738155]]eriko.lim@asiaone.com

A 46-year-old man has been arrested for attempted theft after he was allegedly caught loitering at a Marina Bay car park and trying to open a Tesla on Saturday (June 13).Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the car owner, Zhang Yili (transliteration), 39, said the incident occurred at around 7pm while she was attending GastroBeats with her husband and friends. She had parked at a nearby open-air car park.GastroBeats is a food and music festival held annually at Bayfront Event Space. The fitness instructor said her car was in sentry mode when she received a phone alert at 7.23pm indicating that someone was attempting to open the vehicle's door.Tesla's sentry mode is a security system that uses the car's exterior cameras and sensors to monitor and record suspicious activity while it is parked and locked.«At first I thought it might be that someone had mistaken my car and opened the wrong door, because I had a similar experience before, so I wasn't too nervous,» said Zhang. However, she decided to return to the car park to check on the situation.

AsiaOne's online reach and brand trust has improved over the past year, with weekly online reach by the news site almost doubling to 18 per cent in 2026, while trust rose to 63 per cent, according to a respected annual report.The Digital News Report 2026 was published on Tuesday (Jun 16) by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism based on findings of online surveys conducted by YouGov from the middle of January to the end of February 2026. The report polled more than 2,000 Singaporeans and found that AsiaOne's weekly online reach increased to 18 per cent in 2026, up from 10 per cent in 2025 and 11 per cent in 2024.AsiaOne ranked fifth in terms of weekly online reach, behind news outlets CNA (47 per cent), Mothership (45 per cent), The Straits Times (44 per cent) and Yahoo News (20 per cent).

All ferry and cruise operations will be shifting to the new Singapore Cruise Centre (HarbourFront) terminal, beginning with Batam Fast Ferry on July 7. In a statement on Monday (June 15), Singapore Cruise Centre announced that all remaining operators and cruise services will follow suit and that the new terminal will be fully operational from July 15.There will be no changes to ferry routes, destinations served or scheduling as a result of the move.Ferry services to Indonesian destinations including Batam Centre, Harbour Bay, Sekupang, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Gold Coast and Nirup Island, as well as international cruise operations, will continue as usual, said the company.The ferry and cruise berth locations also remain unchanged, it added.The new terminal is located just 70m away from the existing terminal, within HarbourFront Centre at 5 HarbourFront Avenue. Singapore Cruise Centre added that the new terminal remains accessible by public transport, and that passengers can get there via HarbourFront MRT station Exit B and other existing public transport connections in the vicinity. 

A durian seller was baffled after discovering a man had stolen nine Black Thorn durians worth $240 from his stall in Jurong. The incident occurred on Sunday (June 14) at around 3.40am at the Hojiak Durian & Fruits — located at Block 351, Jurong East Street 31.CCTV footage of the incident, shared on the stall's Facebook page the same day, shows a man dressed in a dark green shirt and beige shorts, approaching a basket of durians with at least three plastic bags in hand. The basket, partially covered with a blue tarpaulin sheet, is slightly exposed. The man is seen setting the plastic bags aside and lifting the tarpaulin sheet before loading the durians into one bag.He repeats the process, filling the other two bags and walks off with three bags in hand.The post captioned: «Sir, if you don't have money for durian, you can come and tell us, and we'll treat you. »You can use the CDC vouchers given by the government buy durian. Don't do anything illegal. Isn't it a bit excessive to take seven to eight durians at once?"

Amid a forested area along Bukit Batok Road sit two large circular tanks — standing tall above the nearest buildings — but blending in amongst the trees.The two tanks are part of the Tengah Service Reservoir, with a combined capacity equivalent to 22 Olympic-sized swimming pools.They are used to store treated drinking water from national water agency PUB's waterworks.Service reservoirs like the one in Tengah help to ensure a continuous and reliable water supply, the agency stated in a news release on Tuesday (June 16).«They serve as a buffer against daily fluctuations in water demand and help maintain supply reliability during periods of peak usage or unexpected interruptions,» PUB said.

One person was taken to the hospital after a chain collision on the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) involving six cars.Footage of the incident posted on Facebook shows the outermost lane of the expressway closed off by authorities with four cars piled-up. Two other cars are also seen stopped at a short distance in front.In the video, authorities are also seen surveying the scene while passengers and drivers involved in the incident stand along the kerb.Two ambulances are also seen, with one person on a stretcher.In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police said that they were alerted to an accident involving six cars along KPE towards TPE on Saturday (June 13) at around 10.10pm.A 47-year-old female car passenger was taken conscious to the hospital, said the police.According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the female passenger was taken to Sengkang General Hospital, and that another three people were assessed for minor injuries but declined to be sent to the hospital.Police investigations are ongoing.
