International Day of the Girl was observed on 11 October at Asmara Palace Hotel under the theme “With Her-A skilled Girlforce”. Asmara, 12 October 2018- International Day of the Girl was observed on 11 October at Asmara Palace Hotel under the theme “With Her-A skilled Girlforce”. At the event in which government officials, heads of national associations, representative of UNICEF, members of the Diplomatic Corps as well as other invited guests took part, Ms. Tekea Tesfanicael, President of NUEW, said that ensuring the rights of women has been one of the fundamental pillars of the armed struggle and that the question of women beyond human rights is part of the national security of Eritrea. Indicating that equal participation of women does not only benefit women but also to the whole society, Ms. Tekea called for integrated effort to eradicate backward traditions and ideas that hinder the development of women. She went on to say that the International Day of the Girl is a reminder for renewing pledge to work for the all rounded development of the Eritrean women. The representative of UNICEF in Eritrea, Ms. Shaya Ibrahim on her part said that UNICEF is working in partnership with the Government of Eritrea in eradicating harmful practices and in the over all development of women. At the event, Dr. Ghidei Gebreyohannes from the College of Medicine and Science presented research paper on causes and consequences of under age marriages in Eritrea. The International Day of the Girl is being observed for second time in Eritrea and for the seventh time at international level. Read more
