Un tratamiento experimental liderado por el Instituto de Investigación Biomédica de Bellvitge (Idibell), en España, logró, en modelos animales, rejuvenecer las células madre de la sangre, lo que podría tener implicaciones en el tratamiento de enfermedades propias del envejecimiento en humanos. «Hemos visto que, aplicando este tratamiento, las características de las células viejas se convierten ahora en nuevas, de tal forma que rejuvenecen el sistema hematopoyético de los animales que hemos estudiado», explicó en declaraciones a EFE la investigadora del Idibell y coprimera autora del estudio, Eva Mejía-Ramírez. En esta investigación, publicada en la revista Nature Aging, participaron también científicos del Instituto de Salud Global de Barcelona (ISGlobal), centro impulsado por la Fundación la Caixa, y el Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS). El envejecimiento es uno de los principales factores de riesgo de numerosas enfermedades, como dolencias cardiovasculares o el cáncer. Aunque es un fenómeno complejo que afecta a todo el organismo, uno de sus principales impulsores es el envejecimiento del sistema hematopoyético, que es el encargado de la creación de las células de la sangre. Estas células, también conocidas como células madre hematopoyéticas, se encuentran en la médula ósea y son responsables de la función vital de producir continuamente todo tipo de células sanguíneas (transportadoras de oxigeno, inmunitarias y plaquetas). Con el tiempo, las células madre también envejecen, pierden su capacidad regenerativa y generan menos células y de peor calidad, lo que se relaciona con inmunosenescencia (cambios que perjudican el sistema inmunitario), la inflamación crónica de bajo grado, varias enfermedades crónicas y el cáncer. El tratamiento En este nuevo estudio, los investigadores descubrieronel potencial rejuvenecedor del fármaco Rhosin, que es un inhibidor de la proteína RhoA. Al aplicar el fármaco en células madre sanguíneas ex vivo (extraídas del cuerpo animal), los investigadores observaron cómo volvían a un estado más joven y decaían las características propias del envejecimiento celular. Las célula madre viejas tienden a la acumulación de mutaciones y a la desorganización del ADN, lo que genera tensión mecánica en el núcleo y dificulta la replicación. Al rejuvenecerlas, estos problemas desaparecen y se mejora la capacidad funcional de las células hematopoyéticas. Empleando este fármaco, las células se convierten en dianas terapéuticas que puedan servir para intervenir en enfermedades propias del envejecimiento, como el cáncer o las dolencias cardiovasculares, e intentar que «no sean tan graves y las personas puedan tener un nivel de vida mejor que durante más años», señaló la científica. La aplicación en humanos Los próximos pasos consisten en escalar lo que se ha visto en ratones a un ensayo clínico en humanos, con la previsión de que pueda ratificar los resultados. «Somos optimistas a la hora de pensar que esto va a ser así, porque las vías que hemos encontrado funcionan también en los seres humanos y las características que hemos visto que son comunes tanto en ratón como en humano», afirmó Mejía-Ramírez. Para esta científica, un avance así sería positivo para una sociedad como la española, que se está envejeciendo porque se alarga la esperanza de vida. En 2050, en los países occidentales la población mayor de 60 años se habrá duplicado en comparación con 2015. Esto aumentará la incidencia de enfermedades crónicas como el cáncer, la demencia y las afecciones cardiovasculares, sobrecargando los sistemas sanitarios y sociales.
