El Presidente José Antonio Kast se reunió este viernes con Michelle Bachelet, en medio de las dudas sobre el respaldo del Gobierno a la candidatura de la exmandataria a la Secretaría General de la ONU. El encuentro en La Moneda fue solicitado por la propia Bachelet, y se trató de la primera cita sostenida después de que Kast asumiera en el poder, la cual se prolongó por alrededor de una hora y media. Por el momento, el Ejecutivo no ha tomado una postura respecto al apoyo a la otrora Jefa de Estado, situación que ha marcado un fuerte debate en el mundo político. Mientras algunas voces piden respaldar la candidatura de Bachelet, otras -especialmente en la derecha- han cuestionado el liderazgo internacional de la expresidenta y han pedido a Kast no apoyarla. Bachelet, quien fue presidenta de Chile en dos períodos (2006-2010 y 2014-2018), recibió el apoyo del entonces Presidente Gabriel Boric y de países como México y Brasil para formalizar su candidatura a la ONU- La elección para reemplazar a partir del 1 de enero de 2027 al actual secretario general de la ONU, el portugués António Guterres, será a finales de año y se prevé disputada, con varios nombres que surgen desde Latinoamérica y otras regiones del mundo. Además de Bachelet, quien se desempeñó como directora de ONU Mujeres (2010-2013) y exalta comisionada de las Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos (2018-2022), desde la región se anunciaron dos candidaturas. La exvicepresidenta de Costa Rica Rebeca Grynspan, actual jefa de Comercio del organismo; o el actual director de la Agencia Internacional de Energía Atómica (OIEA), el argentino Rafael Grossi, han formalizado su inscripción al cargo.
